If your looking for a headset and definitely want to make a investment in quality and performance I would take a look at the Beyerdynamic MMX 300.

It is leagues above the common mentioned headsets from Steelseries, Razer, Logitech, etc.

I did a full on review of the unit to expose its greatnesses and it's weaknesses so if you would like to know more then check out the full review.

Street price is ~$350.00 USD not cheap.

Like mentioned in the review, I feel headsets tend to have a slightly inflated price as compared to equal headphones.

Its the price of convenience as headphones + microphone can be annoying or not as efficient.

Guess it must be the currency fluctuation or some sort of repricing - they were often seen for ~$300 3 years ago. $350 is a slightly harder sell for a $200 headphone even with a really good (as far as headset mics go) mic, a bag, a decent USB soundcard and a 5-year warranty... but still not excessive I think.

I am still on the lookout to get as effective a Dolby Headphone gaming sound out of the MMX 300 as I do out of the Logitech G35 though. I paired the MMX with an Asus STX and the comparison was laughable in the Asus' lack of 3D depth. That the MMX has significantly better drivers than the G35 is undisputed, but whatever soundcard I pair it (or even it's distant cousin, the Tesla T1) with, I just can't beat the Logitech's innate suitability for surround gaming.

I sold off my G930, yes it had good gaming surround but the virtual surround drivers themselves also were a cause of so much grief.

Hear sound out of one speaker in mumble, some games getting cracking/pop noises, in the end I decided I had no reason to hold onto the G930 for such limited use and am more than happy with the surround provided natively by most game sound engines.

My best experience with surround honestly is probably the 3DCMSS from my x-fi card. I recall it working exceptionally well with Battlefield 2 and other games of that generation. It does work with all normal analog headphones so maybe I should install my X-Fi card and give it a shot.

I actually did install it for like 1 day a few weeks ago to test a line-in feature, but took it back out as it was cramping air flow to my dual gpus.

So far comments on the video lead me to notice Astro Gaming stuff is more popular that I had known. I did try to get a Astro A40 w/ Mixamp for review a while back but it never happened. Turtle Beach also has a strong following, but I have not known any of there stuff to be in the "high grade" category as far as headphones/headsets but they used to be one of the best sound cards back in the day.

I just picked up a Steel Series Siberia V2 as they were on clearance, will do that review soon as I can, perhaps a good headset for people on a budget as I hear its UBER comfortable and with the price of about $40 floating around its easy to afford. It may be my leave at work headset for my laptop.

I wasn't referring to the G930. A lot of people seem to have this problem of thinking one product - all the rest...?

I bought an Asus STX and a Fatality something (I just ticked Buy on the most expensive Creative) but both fell flat on their face when used with an MMX 300 vs a G35. It was surprising for sure - and in terms of surround effectiveness, it wasn't improved when I subbed the Tesla T1. I thought about dragging the Orpheus from the living room but decided not to bother and just returned to the G35 for most of my gaming.

I do have to say the the Creative was slightly less worse than the Asus. One other really surprising thing about the super-hyped Asus: Located next to a GPU, it performed really poorly in terms of sound quality.
