I got a Inspiron 1520 15.4'' and I was wondering if a screen protector is worth it for the glossy screen? And are certain ones better than other ones.

I've never used a screen protector, all I do is have a soft cloth to put between the keyboard and screen so that when it's closed the screen doesn't get smudged/scratched by the keyboard. My old laptop lasted about a year like that (until I hocked it, *cough*POS*cough*) and it looked brand new (aside from the splotchy glossy patches which seems common to Acer laptops)

Screen protectors are an absolute must all my portable displays. And they're cheap too. I sometimes accidentally touch my screens by accident and so I don't want to create unnecessary smudges. And I hate using liquid solutions/microfiber cloths to clean screens and worry about hairs/dust/particles getting on them. Screen protection gives me peace of mind.

Can anyone recommend where to get good ones? I have never used them personally but I was thinking about it for my new laptop so I am curious as to where I should start looking. I would rathre have a clear cover over the screen than one that rests on the keys if you know what i am sayin

I think covers are more trouble than they're worth. They are dust collectors in themselves, as its inherent in the plastic used. I just wipe my screen off frequently with a soft cloth. There's no reason it should get damaged when closed. If it does then there's a problem with your laptop.

eXim has been recommended a few times; you can buy them on eBay for pretty cheap. InvisibleShield ( www.invisibleshield.com) as well, though they're a bit more expensive. There's plenty of good brands out there; just do a search and you'll find plenty of past discussions here on NBR. I also use 3m paint protection film to protect my palm rest and other parts of my notebook. They're very cheap as well.

Not all laptops have contact between the keyboard and the screen though.

sony vaio AR laptops have the keyboard area sunken a little so it won't contact the screen. As well, the actual screen surface is recessed into the bezel (sunken into the lid) so there is no chance of contact with the keyboard.
I was relieved to see these two things...I too was looking into screen protection and have not completely ruled it out yet...mostly to guard against all the other knuckle-heads have feel they have to touch the screen to point things out! -
I also have a soft cloth to put between the screen and my keyboard, bought it from shaggymac.com they even cut it to size for me specific laptop its been brilliant to be honest.
I am in no way shape or form connected with this company, I live in Australia and had to order it from the united states because not many places offer such a bloody good product!! -
If you still dont apply screen protector, a soft cloth to put between the screen and my keyboard is a must in order to keep your screen as like it were new.
And yes, shaggymac offers fantastic soft cloth.
