I really want to buy a NuShield for my 17" Inspiron 9400, the problem is, the shiiping via UPS costs $80, four times the cost of the shield. I was thinking about using USPS Letter Post, but that's just regular US mail isn't it? With something like a screen protector, I'm worried about it getting damaged and having to send it all the way back.

Are there any alternatives you know of or good cleaning cloths?

I wouldn't get a screen protector for a notebook. If you;re not touching the screen, I don't see the value. As to a cloth, any microfiber cloth will do the trick.

I would go with Brian's suggestion and get a microfiber cloth. This is the one that i have for my 9300 http://www.shaggymac.com/ and it is very good.

I've experimented with using screen protectors. It is usually very difficult to get them on such a large screen, plus to me it distorted and made the screen look weird.

My old Inspiron 8200 got so dusty after a month. So I got a screen protector for my new DV4000. It costs me $12 from AXSHOP but the shipping took over a month from them.
