Hello guys, I've never used and external HDD before but I'm planning to buy this one as it is kinda cheap and I wanted a cheap one with loads of storage. Now the thing is I will be plugging it in and out a lot of times and I use USB 2.0 (Will be upgrading to USB 3.0 soon). I just wanted to know if this is good for me? if yes then maybe if there's any precautions of using it after I do buy it or you guys have any better deals? 2TB is enough for me but since there isn't much difference in price I thought why not go for 3TB one. If u guys have any suggestion for me or maybe better deals then please do share I'd really appreciate it.

    Thank You

    Two questions:
    • Is the external going to stay on your desk or do you plan on moving it around a lot?
    • What are you going to use it for, file storage or something less common?

    1. Not a lot maybe once or twice a week, the rest of the time computer desk to drawer and drawer to desk, I can't keep it on the desk all the time cuz I'm afraid kids r gonna fiddle with it and it will end up broken in half thus I said I will be plugging it in and out when I need to transfer some files from laptop to this HDD

    2. Nope storage only just to keep my downloaded movies, important files and documents, so I can't risk it being damaged)

Then, the drive you linked is going to do the job just fine. 3.5" externals require an external power supply (which comes with the drive), they can't run from the power from the USB port alone, so it would have been a no go for a drive you move often. Given that the drive won't be under heavy I/O, you won't have to worry about heat under sustained loads, so that isn't a concern either.

I use them on my V1 Windows Home Servers, which are still in service as I haven't bothered to update them and they work just fine. I have the Expansions as backup drives and they've been working without incident. I think when I compared cheaper backup drives a while back the WD's were still the quietest, but that may not be an issue for you - it's not in my case as all the WHS's are in places where I don't care about noise.
