I was wondering if there was a switchbox / splitter that existed that could alow me to effortlessly switch between audio inputs for my x540? So that I didn't have to keep changing wires etc everytime i wanted to use one or the other...
baically this is my planned setup
laptop -> 5.1 usb hub _
\
=> X540 Speakers
/
Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 has a Red/White audio output (I think its called RCA), while the laptop/usb hub has your normal Green/Peach/Black audio output which is what the X540 was built for (I'm not sure what this type of sound output is called...anyone know?).
It should be noted that the X540 also comes with a converter cable that turns Red/White RCA into the Green input, which I imagine would diminish the quality but can't help that I guess.
So yeh, any ideas?

Ok I am a wee bit confused
You are correct that those red and white connectors are called RCA type. Is what you are calling your 5.1 usb hub, actually a 5.1 external usb "sound card"?
Ok so your "hub" has 3 stereo mini (looks like a headphone jack) outputs for front/rear/sub? If so, keep it hooked up like that. You will get full surround sound. Each one of those cables, carry 2 signals. So you are good there.
Now there is no way to get surround from your 360. I mean there is, but the cost of the decoder would probably not make it worth it. I could be wrong on that, there might be something cheap out there. But you would need to be able to convert your optical audio out from the 360 to stereo mini.
But for now, you can those red and white RCA cables. This is what you will need (you can get it from Radio Shack). A female RCA to Male Stereo Mini. That is JUST like the adapter you have, expect it has a male end on the mini side, instead of female. Then a Dual stereo mini Y cable. While you are looking, look for a cable that you would use to be able to plug 2 sets of headphones into one headphone jack. One thing you HAVE to make sure on, is that both of the inputs for "headphones" are stereo aswell. It should say on the box. If they get converted to Mono, you will lose a channel. You could probably just go to radio-shack and ask the guy behind the counter for help. -
The "Hub" is like a docking station but it has a 5.1 sound card in it as well. Google "Toshiba 5.1 Multmedia Hub"
Also, I found this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1Q0TZ2XX1WZYZQBX4HYZ
Which will let me change the red/white to the 5.1 cords.
This means all I need is three Double-Female-to-Single-Male Stereo Mini Y cables.
I can then alocate one Y cable to each front/rear/centre output.
Do you think this could work?
So I'd have like
Code:Laptop Green------\_____Green Single ----> Speaker Green input Xbox360 Green----/ Laptop Orange------\_____Orange Single ----> Speaker Orange input Xbox360 Orange----/ Laptop Black------\_____Black Single -----> Speaker Black input Xbox360 Black----/
Also rgarding Y Splitter cables, are they multi-directional or do I have to get a specific one that takes signal from the 2 females and outputs it through the male? Because sometimes I see Y cables that have 2 female and one male, but the females are the output sides... -
There is a digital out on the back of the stock 360 A/V connector, I wonder if you could use that. I think that it would be a better solution than using RCA cables.

Yeah, I am not really sure what that little adapter thinks it is doing. But I have a feeling it would sound worse using it. I mean how does it know which is signal is for the center/sub/left front/right front/ etc....? MAYBE it has some analog x-overs in it? But I still have a feeling it would sound bad. But then again it is only $5.00 you could always try it

I decided to stop ****ing around with all these wires and adapters and ****, and just spend a little more cash for the Logitech XG51 speakers, which have the green/orange/black 5.1 cables, and also red/white RCA inputs as well. For the added convenience and better sound quality and power, I'd say i'd be saving myself a lot of time and energy.
