My first laptop should be with me in the next couple of days, I'll need to buy a mouse because I don't fancy using the touchpad.

I am thinking about going for a trackball mouse, I have never used one before, are they actually any good? I like the idea of not having to move my wrist which will prevent strains after hours of using the laptop. Are trackball mice good for playing games such as half life 2?

I'd appreciate some trackball mice recommendations.

    Thanks

Aside from gaming trackballs are very nice. They are accurate and easy to use. I will second the MX or VX revolution, both are very nice.

Once acclimated you can decimate as well with a trackball as a drag-mouse. There's just a decent curve to get used to it seeing as most people have spent 10+ years using their preferred mouse it's like second nature.

I've been using a Logitech trackman marble or some such for a decade now. When I got this lappy, I also got the wireless version. My only disappointment is that it's not exactly portable. The receiver is as big as a regular mouse itself and trails about 3 feet of cord. I actually cut the cord and spliced them back together for improved mobility, but I don't recommend this as there are about 10 wires the size of a hair each in there. Once you get used to the trackball it's hard to use a regular mouse again. Your thumb is just so much more mobile than having to use your entire arm to move a regular mouse. Just my 2 cents.

I use a logitech trackball at work and love it. It is flexible, precise and fast for spreadsheets and presentations. I've tried both the thumb trackball and the ones where the trackball sits at your forefinger and middle finger - both work well but I prefer the latter.
Definitely not recommended for gaming tho - I use the mx518 at home.
