In order to use the 360 controller wirelessly with PC you need to buy a USB dongle for it. I have a wired 360 controller and I love it, works great with all games that support a controller. I also use xpadder for some older games, that also works good, lots of good profiles have been created out there for older games.

This page pretty much tells you everything you need to know about using both controllers.

I think the Xbox 360 is pretty much universal. I have both a wired and a wireless dongle and about 5 or 6 xbox 360 controllers, lol. But each one is pretty much tied to a specific PC or Xbox 360.

I like wireless but the wireless dongle is fairly big with a really long wire, and the wired one has a long wire too, so it really is up to you if you want to charge or replace batteries on the controllers much. I bought a couple recharge stations and batteries too. When done just throw it on there. But the regular alkaline AA's last a long time too.

Support in PC games is equal between both. Which is to say, really good. Any Windows game that has controller support will support the 360 and XB1 pads by default. For everything else, there's Xpadder.

XB1 controller doesn't work wirelessly with Windows yet, only in wired mode, so get the 360 pad if you want a wireless controller.

I personally find the 360 controller to be more ergonomic than the XB1, which is too small for my hands, plus I don't like the feel of its offset analog sticks. Its D-pad, however, is much better than the terribad one on the 360, so if you play fighting games or anything that relies on D-pad, the XB1 wins hands-down (thumbs-down?)

The triggers on the XB1 pad are also more "clicky" than the the mushy ones on the 360, and they rumble, if that floats your boat.

You should try out both in a store. I use a wired 360 controller because it's the cheapest and it's all I need.

Just note that an XBOX One controller can only be connected with a wire, no wireless adapter yet that I'm aware of.

This brings up a question I've been trying to figure out for a few weeks with no luck, would love some insight from you guys...

I've used a wired and wireless 360 pad for years without issue, but finally got sick and tired of dealing with the very long cable on the wired or big receiver and long cable on the wireless receiver, so been searching for alternatives. I've since tried the Razer Sabertooth (with detachable cable) and now finally settled on the wireless Logitech F710 that only uses a micro plug and forget receiver.

One oddity that has stumped me is, despite both of these controllers being XIput compatible (and working great with all the other games I've tried), I have run across a game that gets confused with them (and also has the exact same problem with the Microsoft Xbox One controller), and will simply only work correctly with the original Microsoft Xbox 360 controller. It recognizes other brand controllers just fine, but the buttons/triggers are mapped incorrectly unless using a Microsoft 360 brand pad.

Is there an actual XInput reason or compatibility issue? If it's just this one game, I can chalk it up to buggy older software, but just wonder if others have run into similar issues with other games? I'd assume that anything supporting XInput should work across the board, but is this not the case? This might be another reason to go with the 360 pad over the XB1 pad, as it is having the same capabibility issues in this game as my two non-Microsoft pads.

For a bit more on the issue, see here:

It would be great if Microsoft came out with a less bulky version of the wired Xbox 360 pad. As great as it is in design and function, and compatability, its just a bit too cumbersome to wrap all that cable up and make room for it in your laptop bag. Or perhaps, possibly have the wireless version use bluetooth or something, so no need for a dongle.

I think wired 360 controllers are going firstly cheap now. I have no experience with the Xbone controller but I can that the 360 controller is perfection.

If you have the wireless 360 dongle it's quite easy to take apart, solder on a short usb cable/connector and ditch the plastic casing.

    Much smaller that way.

I've used an xbox 360 controller with wireless dongle on my PC for years without issues. The only benefit I would give the xbox one controller is, as @octiceps already mentioned, is the D-pad which is miles better than the D-pad on the xbox 360 controller. Other than that the 360 controller is great.

the good thing about getting an xbone controller is i can share a USB cable between devices :)

the rest of the reasons are usually ergonomic ones. though it doesn't matter since the controller has a similar shape.

The wired controllers also has the advantage of not being on the 2.4Ghz wireless spectrum (like an Xbox 360 wireless controller).

I own an Xbox 360 Wireless for Windows setup (controller + receiver), and have to place my receiver in a very specific location to avoid interference with my WiFi connections.

There's always the DS4 controller you could consider. It's just as compatible as the 360 pad and doesn't require a dongle. It's a big + if you want a wireless controller and travel alot.

Cant you use bluetooth for wireless with the xbox 360 controller?

Speaking about bluetooth, the DS3 sixaxis controller for the ps3 uses bluetooth as well. Can you use that wirelessly with the PC?

Which of those two controllers is better (supported) and has better profiles for more games?

The wireless Xbox 360 controller needs a wireless adapter to work. The cable from Play & Charge kit only works for recharging the battery. Can pick them up pretty cheap over at Dealxtreme so no big deal there. PS3 and PS4 uses standard bluetooth as well as USB cable. As for the Xbox One controller all it works with at the moment is over USB. Think i read that the Xbone also uses some sort of WiFi for their controllers.

Curious, how is Xinput compatibility with the DS4? What drivers do you use and does it consistently support Xinput (ie Xbox 360) in all games? That's been my biggest issue with non MS controllers... some games works, other don't without a lot of work.

I've used both Microsoft-branded and third party Xbox 360 controllers as well as the Xbox One controller with my computer. The Xbox One controller feels pretty nice, but the lack of it being hard wired makes me worry about how long the controller will last. That being said, I'd only go with an Xbox One controller if you plan on using it exclusively with Windows 8.1. I'm sure there's drivers out there that will enable the controller to be used with Windows 7 and Windows 8, but they are not official. If you're using the controller across multiple computers, I'd suggest getting a wired Xbox 360 controller. They're generally cheaper and can easily be disassembled for cleaning.

I'd go with the XBONE controller. Although you probably need to wire it, its overall quality and the feel is amazing

The Ps4 controller functionally is the best controller for PC right now. The touchpad acts as a pc touchpad, tap click and all. It connects via bluetooth or wired and uses a great DSTool program to drive it.

However, I don't like the feel and bluetooth syncing is a hassle, so I generally use my Xbox One controller which just feels very nice. Later in the year an adapter will make it wireless, but with a PC I'm usually fine using it wired anyway.
