Hello. I am looking to buy a Small, Simple Printer for University (or College) use.

I would only need to print (not scan) simple PDF/Word files, mostly with Text and few images (I won't print high quality pictures).

    What do you recommend?

    Hey Jin:

I have always used HP Printers...they are economically priced, and I have found them to work pretty well. :)

Here is a nice one for you to consider, it's small and simple...and only uses one ink cartridge (tri-color). It's nice, since you don't need and all-in-one, or are going to do any fancy photo images! ;) :)

You may be able to get it cheaper elsewhere, or w/any HP applicable discounts! I try not to go to expensive with printers, based on what I may be using it for...as sometimes the cartridge refills can cost more than the printer itself! lol.

I like the Canon printers. Here is a cheap one. However, before buying any of the inkjet printers check if you can buy reasonably priced compatible cartridges. The printer manufacturers make their profit on the ink. The cheaper printers usually have the 3 colours in one cartridge so when one colour runs out you need a new cartridge. A couple of new cartridges at full retail price can cost as much as the printer.

Sounds interesting, but I can't find info about that printer in any european store! Maybe it's called different here?

Hmm, I own a Canon printer in my house (and it's great, because it also prints CD/DVD) but ... is that printer small?

    According to that website:
    Dimensions (WxDxH): 44.2 cm x 25.3 cm x 14.2 cm

And according to another (IP4300, big for me)
    Ancho 445 mm
    Profundidad 303 mm
    Altura 160 mm

So they are very similar in size! Is there any "small" canon printer? (without being "portable" with batteries, I just need it to be small because my room is really small :( )

EDIT: There is also this one http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3579658/Canon-Pixma-MP210-Multifunction-Inkjet-Printer/Product.html in play.com (used only for researching, as they don't ship "Computing" items outside the UK, even if it's a laptop backpack :'(( )

It's a multifunction, not very bigger, but I don't really think I'd need to scan a lot... So maybe I'd stay with simple printers :p

And, I have also linked the Amazon.uk site with the page of availi printers.

There looks to be some good deals... :)

Hehe, I think Amazon.co.uk doesn't ship electronics outside UK (Just like Play.com) but I'd take a look and try to find a local retailer :)

    Thanks

The Canon iP100 is smaller, but not cheap. Any of these inkjet printers need enough room for the print head and cartridges to move and, the more room that is provided, then the bigger the cartridges can be. So that's more printing you get for your money since the cartridge costs do not vary much depending on the capacity.

A multi-function device is an alternative. You can at least store other items on the flat top.

Oh Jin, that's too bad..sorr's again   :( You should be able to find, HP or another brand, at a local retailer though! Remember to watch the kind of cartridges the printer will take, and the cost for refills!! ;) :)

Uhmm, I think that one is "portable" (with batteries) so it's too expensive.

Well, I'll try to find the 2600 :p

I have always been not a fan of the tiny cheap ones. They tend to die really fast, use up way more ink etc. I think one is better off spending around 80-100 on a printer but it will be worth it in the end after the first dies.

But what about the Canon IP2600? It isn't that "cheap".

whatever printer you buy, try to get the models that have separate ink cartridges for C M Y K...

some canon photo printers have separate cartridges... these are great in that if you take a lot of photos of Elmo, you dont have to replace the entire color cartridge for only when the M is out... same goes for Cookie Monster...

photo printers that can print on regular papers is nice... double up on functions...

Don't buy HP, original ink is too expensive and too difficult to refill.

I use a Canon Pixma IP5200R, it has five seperate cartridges, C M Y K and a seperate larger Black cartridge for normal text.

Most printers are not expensive, but the ink is expensive, so get a good one, like a good Canon. But before you buy the printer look on eBay what a refill set, or even better already refilled cartridges, cost, because this is the most expensive part of the printer, not the printer itself.

And the good thing with the Canon printers is, that the print-head is a seperate part, not so on the HP, so the refilled cartridges aren't expensive and easy to use.

So look for printers for which you can buy refill sets or refilled cartridges from ebay or from other online shops.

I've got one of those as well. It's a nice printer but doesn't fit the requirement of being small and cheap. The OP is not planning to do large large quantities of printing, so initial cost is the primary consideration. It may be difficult to justify spending twice as much on a printer in order to make a slight saving on operating costs because of the separate colour cartridges. The bulk of the printing will be in black and white.

Hmm, there isn't any Pccity in this area :(

About the Mp210 dimensions, is that BIG? It doesn't differ that much from the D2560 (and it's multifunction)

    No idea.. :)

Too bad you don't have a pccity store nearby, BUT you can check out the specs of the printers you like with pccity.es, then go to Carrefour or another local store and check if they have these models available..This way you'll know what are you buying because these stores only provide the basic specs..

Hmm I still haven't decided (what a surprise).

On the one hand, a multifunction may be handy (but I have 4 "copy-stores" (?) REAL CLOSE to where I live) so I don't really need it). Also, I'd prefer to keep the printer as small as possible, as my space is really limited (This is my room [IMG] , and yes, those are two spiderman's attached to the window [IMG] [IMG])

What should I buy?? :p (The store nearby only has multifunctions, including Mp210)

As I said before, one advantage of a multifunction device is that you can put other things on the flat top. It might be the better option.
