Anyone any thoughts on how best to build this?

Simple, portable home server. My Books Live any good? (read horrible reviews, but many complaining about mac issues and lack of tech knowledge)

Just need to store Movies/music on it, and need 5-6 devices to access it in like 3 different locations

basically i need a wifi capable hard drive yes?

just use a router with an usb port and connect an hard drive to it. fixed.
you can even access it anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access.
you can also do other things like downloading torrents without a pc and make automatic backups.

Attaching a HDD to a USB enabled router might work, but you wont get as fast read / write speed compared to a decent NAS drive.
If you can afford it, then i would recommend buying a NAS.

Got a 4x 1TB Western Digital ShareSpace myself, but its not very good because of poor hardware and terrible firmware.
    HDDs are good though.

If you decide to go with a NAS solution (which I would recommend) I would say to stay away from the traditional HDD manufacturer all-in-one solutions. The software tends to be barely usable at best.

Go with a company more familiar with building NAS solutions such as Synology or Netgear and then buy whatever hard drives you please to fill it.
