is just* for the title. Doh.
So I'm getting one of these for my laptop:
Targus Laptop Messanger Bag
But I was reading somewhere on here about some people who use both a sleeve and a bag for their laptops. Is this necessary? What do the majority of you folks do? Do you simply use one or the other, or both in conjunction? I plan on taking my laptop to and from school, and to and from work daily.
So I was thinking I could get a sleeve like this: Case Logic Sleeve and go one size bigger on the laptop bag? What do you guys think; is it a waste of money or a sound investment?
Thanks.

Personally I find sleeve + bag more flexible in terms of my choice of bags, but it might end up being more expensive than a budget oriented laptop bag.

Sleeve + Bag ... +1 (actually, I'm first to vote!
)

I carry my notebook around every day, official papers as well.
The bag protects the notebook, and provides space for the files (and or the AC adapter as well when necessary).
I have a sleeve as well, but only using it when traveling casual, with no official papers/files. -
^^And, you get a cookie for that!
XD
@OP..I use a sleeve when packing my lappy in my Messenger & Backpack. I just always have.
Also, that is a nice sleeve. You shouldn't have to go a size larger in a laptop bag. The sleeves I have always ordered were sized accordingly with my lappy & the backpack or messenger, just the same.
Also, OP...Your going to be paying nearly $9 in shipping ordering that from newegg.
Here are some cheaper savings on that same Sleeve I found for you.

sleeve + bag maybe a good idea for certain laptops that are easily scratched, and if the laptop not fitting snuggly in the laptop holding compartments.
-
Bag + skin.
Or in one case, no bag at all

i love the man bag jacket...

Does my Lumbar Sleeve look big in this?
I'm glad I picked up the S-J14 and not the new GT-J19 (the other Suspensor jacket). Gore-Tex Pro Shell is the absolute bomb for weatherproofing, but it's kinda noisy in use. -
lucky you don't have to be a ninja.... maybe more appropriate for James Bond on vacation.
On a side note, my cousin bought a kevlar jacket that could fit ceramic armor plates on the front and back, or X200 laptops in the front and back. This maybe a convenient way to carry laptops around. -
The only problem with that - and one that the Acronyms are designed to overcome - is that if you build load carrying ability into the jacket, it makes the garment droop, unless it's tightly fitted. The Suspensor sleeve actually also only takes X200-ish machines. The biggest in terms of area that it'll fit comfortably is the 13" Air, although obviously it can swallow thicker machines. The 9-cell X201T's battery sticks out, so I can't close the sleeve.

With my backpack, I do not use a sleeve with my T500, but with my laptop bag, I have a ZeroShock sleeve as well. So, both I suppose.

most of the people i see carrying 13 inch macbook pro or air around, don't use any bags. They just carry it like a badge of honour or something.

Ooh, it has a place to clip grenades...

It partly depends on how you get there or what other things you carry around. Where I come from students usually go to school by bicycle, so most likely they'll use a backpack. If the laptop fits in there you might still want to use a sleeve to protect it from other hard or heavy pieces in the backpack.
If I have a backpack with me anyway, I really prefer to put my Laptop in there too instead of having to carry a second bag.
On the other hand, If you only carry your laptop and have a dedicated bag for it, I see no reason to use an aditional sleeve. The design of those bags is usually sufficient to protect a laptop.
One could also use a backpack that is designed for laptops, which would make a sleeve unnecessary, but these special backpacks are often easy to identify as such, which I personally don't like. -
They would certainly be cheaper than the Acronym modular pockets...
... more bang for the buck, as it were.
Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all weekend. -
I've got a Built NY sleeve, which IMO, is the best sleeve out there. I throw in my DM4 inside of it, and then in my Nike backpack. I like the backpack because the shoulder straps have the jelly air stuff which makes it really comfortable and it's just one giant compartment that can fit everything, along with two side pockets that I put a water bottle or headphones/camera and whatever. Also, inside, it has a little zipper compartment that I put my passport and wallet inside when I travel. I've had it for six years now and it's still chugging along. Been all over the world with me...lol. Probably should get a new backpack soon though, maybe this summer.

If I could find a nice slim sleeve for mine, I would do bag and sleeve.
Sleeve and bag, or just is a bag or sleeve enough?
