My parents have presented me with a 15.4" Dell Inspirson 6400. Since I will be commuting to school everyday I would like to know which would better protect the laptop?

Depends on if you already have a great messenger bag/backpack. If you do, then I think a sleeve works well. I don't know anything about 15" sleeves - generally a sleeve is good for smaller notebooks.

Otherwise get a good case for it. There are all kinds of case offerings, and even solar powered ones..

I have a sleeve for a 15.4 inch inspiron 6000 (same case as your 6400) and it works great inside my bag. There are alot of options available. Generally though, sleeves break down into padded and unpadded. you can check out the sticky at the top of the accesories about bag manufacturers and look around for sleeves or bags. but like gautam said, if you have a bag, get a sleeve, you can check out my review here
i really like this sleeve and i'd recomend it :D good luck.
