I have limited desk space so I'd prefer a smaller monitor - ideally around 17".

I can't find any that have an IPS panel and matte display. Hoping this exists but...

if this doesn't exist in the 17ish range, what's the smallest monitor that does?

Looking to spend less than $200.

    Thanks everyone.

I believe smallest currently sold models are either 22" 16:10 or 21,5" 16:9 monitors and since it's matte you want, look for professional displays.
17" are generally 5:4 and extinct. I have one old 17" that has either IPS or MVA panel but it's 7-8 years old... :) When flatscreens were premium, they were also made from premium components. If you find a new 17" IPS display today, it's probably an industrial/medical monitor for a specific purpose and 10x the price.

There are smaller external monitors, but they are all low res, like 1366x768. You need at least 21.5" for 1080p.

OP would you be willing to purchase a lightly used monitor and what resolution are you looking for? Would 4:3 aspect ratio work for you?

As far as I know, 21.5" is the smallest that you can get as IPS, I have one at work (an eIPS) and it doesn't really take up much space. It takes about the same space in terms of height as an old 17" 4:3 LG monitor that I have in a closet somewhere.

@KLF -- Thanks for the info. Looks like I'm forced to get something a bit larger.

@Josea -- I'm looking to buy new. Not dead set on a specific resolution. I'll mainly be reading text, so something big enough to make letters clear.

@tijo -- Thanks, looks like I'll be going with something in the 21-22" range.

Anyone have specific suggestions? I'm a newb at this stuff :)

    Thanks!

    Thoughts on this guy?

EDIT: Looks like it's a VA panel. Which I guess, as far as I know, would be a decent mid-ground between an IPS & TN?

UPDATE: Would also prefer no PWM as that too may cause eye strain.

As a note, if you get a 21.5" IPS display that has a stand that allows the monitor to swivel to a vertical orientation, it won't take up much more horizontal space than a 17" monitor.

I have a pair of 20" Dell 2007FPs on my desktop that are S-IPS monitors. I got them new old stock with two years of warranty remaining for $175 a piece.
