I am not much of a gamer, but is there anything out there that is pretty small that I could bring with me if I am going to have a lot of down time while travelling?

Far and away the best if the Xbox 360 controller. Not the smallest in the world but the best PC controller out there.

For mobility, portabilty the Wiimote is best.
However the smallest ones are the ones made for cell phones, but they are super overpriced. There are also micro computer usb controllers but I hate cords when using something for travel and mobility so I would not consider them.
The 360 controler is a great controller I have the corded one at home for my desktop, but when I packed it with my laptop it took half the bag and the cord gets all tangled and messy fast. The wireless one is an option I have one but have never used it (new in box still) but unlike the wiimote besides being bigger, you also have to take the usb adapter with you. -
I have both the Wireless and Wired 360 controller, and I find the Wired to be better for traveling. Shorter cord!

For the money, The Logitech Cordless Rumblepad. Its about $35, gets astronomical battery life, has excellent range(if needed) and is **** near indestructible. I have had mine for two years and I have only changed the batteries twice. Its similar in design to the Playstation controller in terms of looks. What more can you ask for considering that its made by Logitech. Its not the smallest controller on the market mind you, but its not large or cumbersome by any means.

Another vote for the Cordless rumblepad. They are extremely well build as mentioned. Battery life is also excellent. Under extreme heavy use the battery life should last 1-2months.
