I understand the Sony BDX-S500U USB BD/DVD writer comes with the Cyberlink Media Suite 8 software. Here's a question for you guys that have this drive/model.... Does this software/suite includes an "unlimited" (not trial, not upgrade/add-on) media player software to playback the usual blu-ray movies/discs/titles? Thanks.

Thanks!! From that website, they show mostly the version 9 instead of the older version 8. Then I found some version 8 info at...
Multimedia Suite with Blu-Ray and DVD burning - Media Suite 9
From this table/page the older v8 is pretty much featureless (or the v9 must be bloatware) :) It appears only the Version 8 Ultra can play the BD movies - hopefully Sony is giving this v8 Ultra instead of the v8 Pro or v8 Centra that can't play the BD movies(?) Any clues which one it is? By any chance will Sony give the current v9 with this USB BD drive?

No you get version 8. Sure it has less features than the newer version but it will still play any bluray movie just fine.

Thank you! I have this BDX-S500U drive on order and it should arrive here this Friday.

Would you know where to order (ebay ok too) a pair of USB cables or something with 2 USB connectors/heads that is compatible with this drive so that I don't have to use their AC power adapter? Thanks.

Sony external slim drives are - as far as I know - the only units of that kind that are compliant to USB 2.0 specs. And this is because a power supply unit is used.

These USB "Y-cables" are not specs compliant. They are a dirty workaround that helps reducing customer complaints, but you can't expect such a setup to work properly.
