Going to university and won't be taking my TV because I'll have my laptop instead, therefore I'd really like a nice sound system when watching films and listening to music (especially when having the ladies over).
They need to be pretty cheap and be able to work with my laptop, I've never even looked for a set before so I have no idea what to expect.
Thanks, guys. This forum has provided me with so much information, I am so happy with my current setup and it's all thanks to this community.
edit: Was thinking of something like this, http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/6109400/Logitech-LS-21-2-1-Stereo-Speakers/Product.html, however I can spend a bit more than that.

What is the max you are trying to spend? If you are looking for a 2.1 set, the Logitech Z2300 are great and I have seen them for as low as 80 bucks before.
-
Logitech is a good 2.1 choice for under $100 besides the Klipsch promedia 2.1.

The Logitech Z2300 is a bit higher than I want to spend, the max I'd really like to spend is between £40 - £50, I'm tight lol.

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. $80 refurb, about $130 new. These speakers are absolutely legendary for their sound quality at this size and price. If someone had $100-$125 to spend on 2.1 speakers, I would never recommend anything else besides the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's.

I got satisfying results from LM1876 for a "laptop sound system".
It is a stereo IC with about the same power per channel as the LM1875 at slightly better specs. Connected to a ridiculous power supply (2x9V 15VA transformer plus 4700µF per rail) it makes music that starts to clip well above a normal background listening level, but well below loud listening as well. Until that point it sounds better than most people's home entertainment systems. I use it with an old Canton sat-/sub-system, which I think was specified as 82 or 83 dB/W/1m. I have a Computer Repairs business, and I saw the sound system on one of my costumers laptop then I decided to apply it on my laptop cause I think it was fantastic.
At my workdesk, where it is used now, it is more than loud enough, because the listening distance to the speakers is only 50 to 70cm. The volume potentiometer is usually very close to its counterclockwise limit. Few people, who hear the amp, believe that it only delivers about 5W per channel into those 8Ohm speakers.
