I just bought these Altec Lansing speakers today from Walmart http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5969246
and i thought i would post my review of these for future reference for anyone looking for speakers.
I did take my time in walmart trying to decide between these speakers for $25 and these phillips for $40. both had 2 small speakers and one subwoofer. I finally decided to go with the Altec Lansing because they were cheaper (on a budget) and I always heard good things about their products.
When i got home and hooked them up i decided to try out some music on them. i was impressed as soon as the song started. The two small speakers bring out some pretty good sound, but that subwoofer makes it even better! I thought wow.pretty good speakers for 25 bucks. And There is hardly any distoration at all on these speakers. The sound quality is very good for a cheaper set of speakers. There is a volume knob of course, and 1 for bass and 1 for treble adjustment on the subwoofer. When having the bass all the way up that subwoofer brings out some pretty kickbutt sound and may i stress that there is hardly any distortion, but when there is you can hear it but it is not that bad AT ALL! I am loving these speakers, and i am very happy with the purchase i made! can't wait to try out a game on them!
I would definatley recommend these speakers for anyone looking for a cheaper set or on a budget.
Hope you liked the review!

That's a lot more like customer feedback than a review, but it's still cool that you gave us a heads up.
Out of curiosity: What do you think of the design and build quality? What kind of media did you play with your new speaker setup? Can you compare the sound quality with sound systems you've used in the past?
I'd be interested in a more complete review, if the dorm I'll be living in (in less than four weeks... GASP!) allowed subwoofers. Any suggestions on a nice, cheap pair of dorm appropriate speakers? -
as far as design its more simple as you can see if you go to the website. All black speakers no pretty lights or anything like that. as far as media i played music ..so far..i will want to try out a game as i mentioned up top.
the only other speakers i've used is the regular Dell speakers that came with my desktop to begin with. and these speakers definatley out due those 19.99 dell speakers by far!
yea i know it looks more like customer feedback but this is my first review and i just said what i thought. thanks though.
these speakers are really good for the price, and you don't have to crank them up. LOL...even the sound on low sounds good IMO. you could always buy these and then you'll have a good set of speakers for when you get out of the dorm.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
It would be neat if a 'Back-to-school' type review could be done, comparing maybe 4 or 5 budget speakers ($20-$40). A good way to explain a product is comparing its performance relative to another. Hopefully someone will be able to get something up. -
