I am shopping for a good set of speakers for my dorm. From what I can tell Logitech Z-2300 THX ($85) and Logitech Z-4I 2.1 ($60) look to be the best for the money. Is there a good reason to go for the z-2300 over the Z-4I other than louder volume? Is there a quality difference? From reviews it seems that the Z-4I is plenty loud for one room. Finally, what is the difference between the Z-4 and the Z-4I? It says the I is for computers...what does that mean?
Are there other comparable speakers I should look at?
Thanks so much!

I would definately get the Z2300 out of both. The Z-4I seem to have these terribly tiny tweeter/mid-range speakers, which don't really produce anything like a mid-range. So what you will get will be lots of bass, some mid-range from the subwoofer, so you will hear where it is, then a huge hole where there is nothing, and then some higher mid-range sounds. Very unbalanced. The Z-2300 doesn't look a lot better, but then considering the price... My choice would probably be something like the Nubert nuPro models, but they cost like 10x as much. But maybe something like the cheaper Behringer, like the 2031A might be worth a look. They do cost a bit more than those Logitechs though.
Ps: Good speakers can do loud easily, but they also sound better when listening at a low volume. -
I have the Z-2300's and they are awesome. The bass is very deep and powerful, i could shake stuff in my suite mates room. An added bonus is that if you are trying to sleep and a neighbor's music is too loud, you can turn yours up louder and they get the point quickly. I did that a number of times.

@ samw51: Of the 3 choices you have presented. I would humbly recommend the Z4/Z4I. It doesn't matter which. I believe they're the same product in different colors. -
I too have the Z-2300 and I love it. I had them in my dorm room this past year, and needless to say, I couldn't have hoped for anything better. I suppose if you had neighbors that like silence often they wouldn't be so great, but my neighbors were awesome and we partook in many parties using those speakers

it sounds like the z-2300 might be more than I really need...I just want decent sound and my macbook speakers suck! I'm really not that into audio stuff. Any cheaper recommendations?
thanks to everyone who answered! -
1. Power. These speakers are really worth the money for the amount of power they put out. (Ill put it this way if your neighbor is having a noise war with you with their Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Oe Aiwa Shelf System you will likely win the war because they go extremely loud 117DB.
2. Sound Clarity and Acuracy. These speakers not only has alot of power but the sound is very clean and clear. You can pretty much hear every detail in mostly anything you listen to.
3. Bass- House shaking bass (need I say More?) The Logitech Z-2300 Subwoofer has a 120watt subwoofer with a 8" longthrow Driver. Theres a heatsink to keep the Amp cool. The HeatSink also gives a good clue that this Amp has some serious power inorder to be producing heat.
The Logitech Z4 doesnt have a 8 inch driver instead it houses a 4 inch driver inside the enclousure. So to me it isnt worth the price tag you might as well get the Z-2300 for a few 40 bucks more. You Will Not Regret It
