    Hi all,

I'm currently looking for speakers for my Acer 8204 as a Christmas present (so price isn't really an issue). I have loved my acer so far and it hasn't given me any troubles so far, just sound quality could be better. I live in residence at the moment and a house next year, so size is a potential issue. I have no idea what this sound card supports (or rather what it is). Ideally the package would include 2 or more speakers, a subwoofer (something with good bass), and an external control (either remote or dial). Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Logitech, Bose, Klipsche, and Harman Kardom are good brands to look into......check my guide in the accessories section of the forum.....It's titled "Looking for new speakers" ,The guide is on the last page of the thread I believe, it should provide some more help and suggestions......let me know it you have any more questions.

Altec Lansing makes good speaker sets, at moderate prices. Check out the Altec Lansing VS3251, a 5.1 speaker surround sound system with a remote control. You should be able to get them for around $50 or so.

Cool, thanks for the ideas. I think the best choice would be a 2.1 or a 5.1, does the 8204 support both? I'll continue to look around

    thank again

Quick question -- have you considered headphones? And I don't mean cheap walkman-type phones -- I mean a quality/studio pair of serious hi-def headphones.

The advantages of headphones are many. First, even the larger over-the-ear headphones are portable, some models even fold up and have carrying cases. What could be better than that for your laptop? Second, a good pair of headphones can shut out a lot of garbage noise -- great if your home is noisy, jet engine drone is driving you crazy, or you need some peace in the library. Third, the fidelity of a quality pair of headphones is fantastic -- and yes, good headphones will blow away the sound from computer speakers. There's a reason people use headphones in music studios -- the fidelity is fantastic, headphones can be very comfortable, and compared to speaker prices, headphones are attractively priced.

A good set of headphones will hit all the notes, and provide you with good base to boot.

You can get good info at Head-fi, those guys are serious audio nuts. And they can recommend a good set of headphones to meet your budget.

I use a pair of Sennheisers. They're so good, I use them with my desktop computer.

I was thinking that speaks would be best; for i plan to watch movies with friends or listen to music during parties or whatever. So i have a few ideas, but i have little idea what the different between them is: Logitech Z4, JBL Encounter 2.1, Klipsch ProMedia 2.0 or 2.1 or v.2-400

Any suggestions or recommendations? And price is not an issue (100 to 250, perhaps)

    Thanks

If you go for a 5.1 system you will have to get an external sound card that supports 5.1 surround.
For $150 at circuitcity and a lot less online you can have the logitech z2300's(2.1)...~$200 at logitechs web site will get you the z5300e's (5.1)....if you don't want either of these then i suggest you get the Klipsch PRomedia 2.1...there much better than the z4's from logitech.
