Yes you can hook most speaker systems to a laptop. However, many laptops don't have a super sound card, but some do. If you mean can you use a 5.1 surround speaker system - and the get the benefits - your laptop will need to supply 5.1 output(5 speakers plus 1 sub-woofer). I can't speak for all laptops, but the Averatec 6130HS does have S/PDIF (Sony/Phillips Digital InterFace) output, that will allow it to be fed directly into the better speaker systems for full digital surround sound. Most all notebooks use the mini-phone jacks (1/8") for input and output of both digital and analog sugnals.
There are some USB based speakers, and they will generally provide the best sound, provided your amp and speaker system have the quality. But they also use more CPU overhead, so for demanding gaming, you may want to go the analog route.
Speaker systems range from $49, all the way up to $400, so there's a wide range to choose from. There are some nice sounding systems from Creative and Klipsch as well as many other vendors.
Good luck,
