    I'm just curious...

would you rather have a good pair of headphones, or would you rather have good speakers?

I would rather have a really good pair of headphones, i dont think you really need good speakers unless you hold parties or something... but that is just my opinion... ;)

so what do you guys think?

So you're not gonna get the Z-2300's?

Well then, Sennheiser hd580's would be the PERFECT pair of headphones for you.

Look them up, excellent sound quality.

i never said im not going to get the speakers...

its just that all i have now are bestbuy gift certificates, and those speakers are overpriced there... so i think im going to wait untill i have $55 in cash, and get the x-530 found here:

    http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-5-Pi...r_1/104-3237748-7271153?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

I'm also planning on gettin these headphones from besbuy, but ill check out the ones you recommended too ;)

There is nothing wrong with the Bose sound per se... they just get bashed a lot because for the performance/price ratio you're paying double for similar sound half the price. You pay the extra to cover Bose's marketing fees ;)

The CX300 are getting a bit of love for a budget canalphone. You may also consider the Sennheiser PX100 (black is nicer ;)) for a very nice budget as well. Surprisingly detailed, nice construction that make them look more expensive and nice intro to the Senn sound. On top of Zelio's tip, you may also consider Grado SR-60s if you wanna splash a bit more of your budget

P.S. Seriously, seriously stay away from head-fi forum. Maybe shouldn't have posted that actually...

P.P.S. Speakers v headphones. Headphones are more personal and you don't disturb neighbours. Speakers aren't portable but you fill the room with sound. Nothing you didn't already know I suppose...

Its a large American based headphone forum. I presumed you'd stumble across it researching. Problem is I entered and haven't left yet having spent £673 so far :p Its a head-fi joke..

Anyway, I don't know about the Philips, just that not many buy outside of the CX300 due to rampant internet love for it (I have moved on to IEMs, so can't comment). I've tried Sony (never again) and Panasonic (disused due to IEMs :() canals only

I've just searched CX300 US prices and now understand why many Ebay. Its expensive! You can pick up a pair of Etymotic ER6i's for the price! The Philips may well be decent as a budget option. I find you can't expect much for the money anyway. You seem to want portable phones, so also look at Koss KSC-75, if you're OK with clip-ons. Earbuds; Senn MX500. But do look consider the PX100s :D Probably best bang for buck in budget range imo, although there are those who prefer the Koss (but I don't like clip-ons)

I'm not an expert. I read and regurgitate a lot of info that's all. I freely admit that :D Waiting for someone to realise I do it here too..... (please don't hurt me mods!)

The Philips shouldn't be bad. My bro used to have them and they looked quite stylish with the diff colours offered. You'll get semi-isolation, which may be a bonus for you... I vaguely remember them sounding like my MX500 earbuds. Sorta bass-biased, can't reach the high highs, but then practically all canals are like that and again for the money...

But I look at your username and think you should get full size instead, like the Senn 580s suggested, simply because they're more suited for gaming I think; bass response and spatial awareness wise. They double up for music use too! Ignore if you only want the Philips for a MP3 player

I don't get the 'wow factor' around the CX300. They're good in-ears for the (outside of the US) money with a 2-year warranty. Not a huge jump over other earphones which use similar transducers like the JVC FX55.

With the Philips I guess you can't lose.

The other option is the Shure E2c which Best Buy sells. Not the greatest sound for the money and fiddly to fit but certainly the most isolation from outside sound.

The HD580 seems inappropriate if you're powering it from a laptop. They are 300-ohm headphones.

I like both, and have both. :)

I don't use headphones when I am at home. I love a good speaker system...but I am obsessed with music.

I use Sennheiser PX300 headphones, which are superb.

I use Klipsch ProMedia 2.0 speaker setup for my computer.

I use NAD (Canadian) speakers for my home audio system

I use both for different purposes. For most of my music bumpin' needs I'm using my Logitech Z-2300. When my roommates are sleeping or I'm playing games I'm using a cheap Plantronics headset. If I were to buy another set it'd definately be a Sennheiser. The only other full sized headphones I'd consider are Bose...but those don't have a mic (for gaming). But since you said you mostly use headphones for things like psp, I'd recommend the in your ear type. Shure, Etymotics Research, Ultimate Ears, Bang & Olufsen, M-AUDIO...course those are all way expensive...and since you said you don't want such expensive ones I'd just go with the basic Sony in your earphones...not the cheap $10 ones, but the ones that sell for around 30-40.

I love headphones, but at the same time I like a nice rockin' system with plenty of bass, mostly like the system in a car though. I personally own a pair of PX100's and I don't use anything but them. I've used many other types of headphones from Sennheiser and other companys and I don't think any of them have an upper hand versus the PX100's. If you want the band to go around the back versus the top then get PMX100's(Also cheaper). Thats just my 2 cents.

    P.S.
I'm glad to see people supporting the PX100's they are an amazing pair of phones IMO.

PX100 is a great buy, since you can get them at Bestbuy. But, they are others out there that surpass the PX but cost twice as much.

I personally own the Koss Proportables and the AL im716 they are both great. But, you can't get them at bestbuy.

I'm all about my Grado SR-80s when I'm at home... even if they make you look like a WWII radio operator... :D

head-fi is a sickness, I tell ya. I'm in the early stages, I've only spent a couple hundred (Canadian) on my USB DAC and phones. looking at a proper amp instead of piping through my CD player next. bye bye, wallet.

The PMX100's go around the back of the head if that helps any. They are cheaper at newegg too. Not sure if best buy has them.

I've thought about this and the CX300 recommendations a bit.

Keep your voucher while you amass more cash for speakers, go to J&R and get a JVC HA-FX55 (without volume control). It's only 25 bucks (+ship) and gets very close to the Sennheiser CX300. You don't get the 2 year warranty but what you get is basically the CX300 with more bass. Cord is a bit longer than the Sennheiser but this might be a good thing for laptop use.

I'd rather get a good pair of headphones.

I would enjoy good speakers but in general I'd use headphones more. I'm not that type of person that plays my music out loud for everyone to hear it. I'm more to myself so headphones are for me.
I'd enjoy good speakers for watching movies or playing a few games. But when I graduate from University I'll get myself a home entertainment system for movies. So there's no real need for good speakers (for me).

Near perfect ratings, and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Only things that suck are people who don't know what good quality headphones are. The PX100's may be nice to the untrained ear, but all they are are basically alot of bass, and no clarity.

The px100's aren't bad, I own a pair. For playing ds lite, they are great. But if your really serious about headphones, get something like the hd580s.

    You talking to me?

The HD580 recommendation was bad because laptops (and most soundcards) have limited amp power going to the headphone socket which is not optimal for a 300-ohm phone like the 580 - or the nearest replacement/upgrade, the HD650. I wasn't criticising the phone out of ignorance - I was criticising the recommendation, OK?

Oh - and the PX100 is a fine phone for the money (and my ears are definitely trained), but it's open which makes it a little less enjoyable outside. I prefer closed headphones which keeps out noise and in-ears like the CX300 (or the JVC I pointed out earlier).

i would have a set of really good headphones over a set of good speakers; few reasons really but the first one is that headphones are portable just like my laptop. Secondly: when i play games i find that with a decent set of stereo headphones the 3d sound works soooo much better

the way I look at it, the environment that the sound bounces around in has a huge impact on what you hear. the headphone manufacturer can tweak the space between the driver and your ear drum to get pretty close to the ideal "room" for the sound. I don't know about you, but the room that my computer is in has all kinds of junk all over the place. If I lived in a perfect anechoic chamber... sure, speakers would be great, but I don't.

To hell with it and get both :D I have about 5 portable headphones but I'm now looking for some 2.0 speakers. After that, some full sized cans

Seriously, its been a while, so which do you think you'd have made more use of? In the sense of headphones being personal and speakers sharing your music but *maybe* bothering people who don't want to be

As I understand it, you plug the transmitter that comes with the logitech freepulse into any audio jack. Why not just put it into your headphone slot on your laptop and just try it like you would on your DAP? Actually the headphones only communicate with the transmitter? - so I don't know why'd you'd try to cut it out of the loop and go direct with your laptop. Nice idea, but try the transmitter with the laptop ;)

yah uh i finally got it to work, had to hold the button for 15 whole seconds to get my laptop to pick up the BT headphones

and yes, my laptop has bt built in so i can connect things such as keyboards, mice, and headphones wirelessly to my lappy with no dongle/receiver at all. =P

    Howdy all,

I see alot of people raving about the Sennheiser HD580's which look great, but I'm curious if anyone has any experience with the Sennheiser HD280's??

They're a little more affordable for me on sale @ 79.99 as opposed to the 149.99 on the 580's.

    Any thoughts / opinions?
