Ok. I'm about to buy some speakers thinking I will keep some at the computer for now and buy some nice pricey speakers for the rest of the house at a later time. Can someone tell me what the difference is between 2.1 and 5.1- and what that number stands for.
And maybe your favorite speakers. Many are suggesting the Logitech Z 2300? Good bad? Or any other suggestions.
    thanks

2.1 consists of 2 satellite speakers and one subwoofer
5.1 means 5 speakers(one main, two side and two back) with one subwoofer.

It depends what type of speakers you want, the price you want to pay. Of course, you also need a sound card to utilize 5.1 speakers and above.

Well, there's also the desire for Surround Sound.

If you want SS, no point getting the 2.1/2.0 systems.
IMHO, 2.1 speakers are built better for music. It's a long story, but that's the case.

An excellent 2.0 system would be the Bose Companion 2. They are the best speakers for $99.

The Altec Lansing GT5051 is a good, cheap 5.1 system. But I'm not sure if they still make them.

I am basically looking for some good, mostly music speakers, but plan on purchasing a network device to transfer everything later to a stereo with a much higher grade of quality. So maybe 2.1 is the best for my needs right now. Also... how do I tell if I have a sound card and/or whain my PC. ??
In case I would look for some SS.

Just to add my 2 cents: If it's music that's the primary reason , then invest in a good 2.1 / 2.0 speaker set. But if it's gaming you want to do, then 5.1, and even 7.1 are worth trying out. Music sounds best on stereo speakers, since it is almost always encoded with 2 channels.

For 2.1 speakers go with the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's on amazon. NOT the GMX's. Far better than the Bose.
