The subject about sums it up and I've searched the forum to no avail. A lot of people talk about cooling pads, but not so much a stand. I'm looking for a laptop stand that has legs to raise it up a little (adjustable is probably best). It needs to be at least somewhat mobile and not look like it belongs in a nursing-home or that a TV dinner would be eaten off of it.

Some of what I've found includes:
Amazon.com: iCraze Stand for Laptop, Ipad and Books + Laptop Table Laidback Computer Desk Portable Bed Tray Book Stand Multifuctional (Black): Computers & Accessories
    Amazon.com: WorkEZ Executive: Office Products

I'm wondering if any of you have had any experiences, good/bad, with anything like this?

I have Logitech Lapdesk n700, it works on recliner couch very well. It still rests on my legs but cushions work and even my 17" laptops do not feel too heavy. Also the shape of cushion reduces heat... and the n700's fan circulates air, I've found it cools more me than laptop :D It worked really well when I bust my back and couldn't sit in a chair for a week...

Logitech's finnish website doesn't have them anymore but it's missing all the good stuff anyways.
Product Support & Software Downloads: Laptop Products - Logitech there's the lineup, don't know what's for sale there :)

I don't use it in bed though, so no experience there.

If your handy enough, you can buy a shelf from your local hardware store and make it into a tray. You just need to get it wide enough so you can cut 12" off each end and screw each cut end onto the side of the main piece.

Conversely, you can also cut a piece of plywood and sand/stain/polyurethane it into a small laptop table that will sit next to you on the bed. That is what I did.

I've been using the Amazon.com: Labtec Logitech Portable Lapdesk N315 with Retractable Mouse Pad for the past year. Within about six months, it started falling apart. It does the job of keeping heat off my legs and it barely functions as a good mousepad.

I am hoping to keep weight off too which means legs and I'm not sure I've seen anything like that from Logitech. I'm not a big person, so it doesn't take too much weight to appear feel like a fair amount given little surface area.

What you suggested looks nice, but it's still just something to sit on my legs. That said, it might be better (with the cushioning to distribute weight) than what I've got going on now.
EDIT: Giving it a bit more thought... a cushion would make a big difference, but WOW on the price on that thing!

Haha. I'd love to have something more static like that, but I'm not sure how that'd fit in a big laptop case. I'll give you a dollar to custom-make me a solution. ;)

That's the idea. A bare laptop is hard and digs into your leg after a while, even with added weight cushions make the big difference and their shape helps keep things cool.
n500 is the same thing without speakers and fan, cheaper.

I'd need a litte more than that to make a custom tray. Hardware is expensive these days. :D

But KLF has the right idea. I've used a cushion tray (cushion was filled with styrofoam bean bag beans) and it did fairly well with my old XPS M1710. The only drawback is your lower half must remain perfectly still. If you shift even a little, the tray will slide sideways right off your lap.

BYLLAN Laptop support - Vissle gray/black - IKEA

Cheap and available almost everywhere. However it has a downside: it obviously functions like a pillow in your lap and after a (user defined) time it is just too uncomfortable. I could imagine it works well during winter when heating fails. Bean bag bottom helps it to level on bed/sofa well. I have one but I wouldn't recommend it for extended use.

My cousin has one of those. And it was uncomfortable after 30 mins for something as small as her MBP 13. I couldn't imagine using my old bean bag lap tray for my Alienware. I'd lose circulation in my lower extremities by the time I booted up. :D

The OP is probably looking for something more along these lines: BRÄDA Laptop support - IKEA

Only downside to a tray is it isn't always usable on a couch. There's not always enough room crosswise to use it.
