So recently, I encountered some problems with my laptop's display, and while waiting for it to get fixed, I was borrowing a friend's monitor. I know that even if I replace the laptop in the future, a monitor would still be useful, so I am in the market for a new one. I noticed there isn't really a FAQ for this, but I'm interested in one that has:

    Screen from 19" to 24",
Multiple options for input (VGA, DVI, HDMI)
No preference for brand, but should be durable and under $300.

    So, any suggestions?

I'd look at Acer and Dell. They both make very good monitors.

Is there a good place to make these purchases? I mean, of course I'd rather be able to see the monitor in person before buying it, but I'm hesitant to do so at a place like Best Buy - I've had too many problems with that. I wouldn't mind ordering online at newegg.com for example, but how reliable are they in case the monitor they ship have defects?

They have an 8 dead pixel policy (might be 6). I ordered my 20" Acer from there and it's great! Nothing was wrong, it was shipped in perfect condition.

Well, what do you plan on doing on it? Do you game? What's the GPU in your laptop?

Ideally, you'll want one that you can drive at native res with your laptop GPU and do the things that you want to do. Depending on the power of your laptop GPU. It can range from 19" at 1440x900 to 20"-22" at 1680x1050. Finding a good 24" at 1920x1200 is going to be hard at under $300.

Well so currently I have a T43 with native resolution of 1400x1050 (SXGA+) on a 14.1" Screen. In the future, I think I may look for something of the range up until 1680x1050, nothing bigger than that.

I do game, but not intensively, and the most graphically demanding game that I can think of that I'll be playing is probably Dawn of War 2 whenever that comes out. The GPU in my laptop right now is ATI Mobility Radeon X300 with 64MB memory inbuilt. That will change with the next machine of course.
