Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a portable surge protector for my laptop. Any electrical engineers out there who can tell me what sort of rating to look for for a decent one or something? Or is a surge protector a surge protector a surge protector? Nobody really seems to be reviewing them or anything as far as I can tell.
Any input?

A surge protector is a placebo 99% of the time, so just decide on a budget and get one.

Or literally an insurance policy. Many surge protector manufacturers offer to replace damaged equipment that was connected (up to a specified maximum, of course). So, there is a good chance your notebook will still fry, but you may be reimbursed.
Do note that most computer company's warranties do NOT cover damage from power surges--and that exclusion also refers to a surge via the internet connection (phone line, etc).
Just to further complicate things . . . has anyone experienced damage to their wireless card (or motherboard or notebook as a whole) due to a nearby lightening strike ? -
Try the Belkin Surge Master. It is vey good. I've used it for four years now and never had a problem. You can also protect a DSL line and it comes with an insurance policy and apparently...you can claim up to £50,000 for damaged devices.
