I was looking in the internets for a nice headset with 5.1 or 7.1 surround, and I have found that most of the reviews say that:

    • There is NO subwoofer, therefore it's actually 5.0 or 7.0 surround
    • Sounds coming, in-game, right in front of the player aren't played (WTF??)
    • A noticeable lack of bass

So... there exists a pair of headphones that DON'T suck? All you audiophiles out there, LET'S HEAR YOU!

    lol... hear you... :D

Um i heard u lieked mudkipz.

First bullet point. That's wrong. You are the subwoofer
Second bullet point. No you can hear them because it's headphone.
Third bullet point. You are a ****ing **** face ******. Some headphone has super strong base.

This is to the guy that did the review, not Apuleyo.

    To Apuleyo,

I would suggest the sennheiser HD650

Very very good headphones, i have them. Awesome, rapes that Boose ****.

KrieGLoCK, I had my own suspicions about those reviews but didn't want to risk it.

Does the HD650 have surround? Or it isn't necessary for gaming? Cause I am debating whether to buy an external USB sound card- you know, the one with 5.1 surround that Xoticpc offers- and I don't want to spend money on speakers.
The point is, is the surround worth it?

Thanks for the comments and enjoy that comically oversized burger

I wouldn't fuss about Surround Headphones, if anything I would just go for a proper Surround Sound system.

If you want nice Headphones, Sennheiser are the way to go, depending on how powerful the Headphones are, you might need to pick up a Headphone amp! The HD Sennheisers are amazing, both in sound clarity and bass, you should look at them!

Any type of 'surround sound' headphone wont be as nice as a good set of normal headphones that have a good sound stage. The HD650's are very nice phones, but they're very expensive, and they are very power hungry. Unless your running with a very good source amp, and good source files then the HD650's will be a huge over kill. I'll even dare say that unless you've got like a woo6 or a headsix amp, or something in that range, then the HD650 wont be the best pick for you.

It's gonna be for a Sager NP9262. You know, to play games. That already is an overkill for a laptop, but not for a desktop replacement :p

I am of the opinion that gaming is best left to 'open' headphones such as the Sennheiser HD5XX series (of course the HD650s are better). Supposibly open headphones create the sound 'environment' around you better. I am also of the opinion that you want realistic bass, not headphones that pretty much artificially boost it.

I am not exactly an expert on this but that is what I picked up off reading various things.

Or I could suck it up and get actual surround. But for a notebook... that seems just too weird!

Yeah, jsf_enthusiast is referring to sound stage its basically how well a pair of headphones can make you feel like your in the game, or a concert or whatever, some have very good sound stage, some have very poor. Its more about the pair of headphones not open or closed. Even with your 'over kill' laptop, the HD650's are very picky headphones, if your not using good gear to drive them($500+ amps) then they wont have a full range like they should, sure they'll sound better than some headphones but if you get lower impedance phones then you can drive them with lesser amps and have them sound good, and use them to their potential.

I've had the Zalman 5.1 headset, and now I got the Tritton AX360 5.1 Headset. The Tritton is a major quality upgrade from the Zalman 5.1 in all around function; but both have the very same major flaws.

Cons: Incoming noises meant to come from the front or behind can't really be distinguised from each other.
Expect to hear lows well and highs too well, while mids are washed out where you'll increase its volume manually. Then they are fine, the volume is tolerable, just don't expect to hear anybody calling you at that point.

Pros: For movies and video-gaming the seperated sounds and all-round ear-cuffs still makes for a better environment than normal stereo headphones.

BUT FOR MUSIC, as mentioned about the they suck horribly and you will tear in euphoria when you next try normal stereo headphones (for music).

Since I'm less for music, I still bought those Tritton headset after because of the 'enviroment' feeling they give still with movies; without having to disturb your family.

    Go for HD595 or HD555

I laugh when someone mentions surround sound headphones...most are bullsh*t.

Real headphone manufacturers make normal stereo headphones which have something called SOUNDSTAGE

This property makes the sound positioning much more accurate than so called surround headphones.

Well then stereo headphones it is. The Sennheiser HD555 looks pretty swell and it isn't as expensive as the others. I think I'm going for that one :)
