I'll keep this short and sweet: I'm trying to decide between the Logitech X-540's and the Z-2300's.
Here's a quick rundown of each:
X-540:
5.1 Surround Sound
FDD2 drivers to provide balanced sound from all directions
Total RMS: 70 watts
Total Peak: 140 watts
Z-2300:
2.1 Sound
THX Certified
Total RMS: 200 watts
Total peak: 400 watts
8-inch subwoofer
Although the Z-2300's seem much more popular, would the extra wattage really be needed? For my purposes, I don't crank the volume up very high.

i have the x-540s and they are great for my uses.....like you, i rarely have the need for blasting music very loud, but those random dorm parties at my room are always a success.........the 5.1 surround sound is awesome for movies and games........especially with the matrix mode.
the way i see it, if u play games, or watch movies and don't need crazy loud sound, go with the x-540s, if you pride loudness over games/movies, then go with the z-2300 either way, they are logitechs and you won't be dissapointed
good luck with the decision -
I am very high on the 2300s, as I used to own the 2200s. They rock man.
Really depends on you though. I used to be really into 4.1/5.1 setups, having owned the Cambridge Soundworks FPS1000 4.1 and DTT2500 5.1 setup back in the day, but for a while now I have been into 2.1 for my PC, owning the Logitech Z4s currently. I personally think it's better to keep the 5.1 setups in the living room along with the big screen and keep the 2.1 setups for the computer. But if your computer IS your home theater, then well, you might be better off getting a 5.1 setup.
I guess though, if you crank up the 2300s, you are going to be surrounded by sound anyway- trust me. -
I love my Z-2300 speakers. I don't have a need for 5.1 speakers and setting them up around me in my room would be cumbersome. I'm quite happy with good quality 2.1 speakers.

have you considered the razor mako? they are THX certified and produce gorgeous sounds. quality of these speakers are amazing, check it out.

Definitely the 5.1 speakers please. But you have to make sure you have them hooked up probably, else they will sound just like the 2.1.

For Pure music 2.1
for Everything else.. 5.1 -

In a dorm go for the 2.1 The sound should be just fine from that, and the music won't sound much better. 5.1 in a dorm is overkill, I've done it and I find that I prefer my 2.1 much more in dorms.

it depends a lot on the speakers.
For ultimate experience i suggest Stereo Studio Monitor grade speakers.
will cost u atleast $800 ..but its worth every penny.
can easily last generations -

Well I'm not very picky about the sound, and my budget definitely doesn't reach $800. This is more for music, movies, and games, and it's in a room that's the size of a small study.
Surround sound or incredible 2.1?
