I'm looking for something to record class lectures (it's my first semester in college and I find that I often miss some points the professor says so I'd like to be able to record and listen to it again)
What's the best way to do this? Tape recorder?

Hi.
I would say an Olympus DS-30 256mb or DS-40 512mb - digital voice recorders
They have a lecture recording mode amongst others.

Is there another option that is cheaper? Around ~$50?

Tape? This is the 21st century we're all digital baby. I use a Cowon D2 mp3 player for my voice recording needs. It has an impressively nice mic and would easily catch what your professor says. Even for around the 50$ mark just go to best buy and try out the different mp3 players and see what works best.

ive seen people at my university putting their phones to record and then leaving them on the lecturers desk or table.
just remember to put it to not vibrate or ring. theres nothing more distracting than phones going off combined with someone running to the front to shut it up. weve got one lecturer who places a builders hammer next to the phones incase one of them goes off. good way to get people to put them to silent i think.
if not there are cheaper dictaphones availible. have a look on amazon. -
I still use the good old mini tape recorders. The only problem with them is the limited recording time.
