I just picked up a Targus notebook cooling chill mat. They have them at Circuit City for $30 - $20 in rebates. I read on the back of the package the following:
----
This product contains chemicals, including lead, known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. WASH HANDS AFTER HANDLING
----
(I put the last part in caps)
What is up with this? Is this a safe product to be using and handling everyday and possibly putting on your lap? Does anyone else have one of these and know what's going on with this warning?

i wanted to buy one of those after i got my laptop....thank you for pointing that out!...ill follow along in this tread...see what others say.

I would immediately return it. Lead is dangerous AND hazardous to your health, if you have kids that like to touch everything and put their hands in their mouth, i would be running fast as i could to return it. Just look up in google about lead poisoning. I can't believe Targus would make a product using lead, even though it might not be a significant amount, its always better to be safe then sorry.

ummm....your computer probably has mercury in it, not to mention the battery juice, so are you going to stop using that? I've had a targus cooling pad for two years now and I haven't grown a third eye or extra limb.
Its all closed in plastic, so I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't eat it. -
While looking at the label again, I noticed that this warning mentioned the state of California. I live in California and know that we have tons of evironmental laws here (some say too much!). In fact, I've heard that some businesses leave because of the strict environmental laws. Anyway, I wonder if this is just a California law that looks for any possible hazard no matter how big or small?

if there are even trace amounts of any toxic chemicals/ substances with even the slightest chance of leading to some kind of harm, they have to be labelled for the customer to see. I live in CA too. I don't know if its limited to just California, but its beside the point.
Your not going to DIE from using the Targus Chill thingy with your laptop. Just don't use it in the bathtub. -
After researching around a fair bit, including seriously considering more expensive ones -- this is what I have decided to get: BYTECC Notebook Cooling Pad ( Aluminum ) Powered by USB port Model NC-500 (USB) - Retail

Someone with more knowledge on this subject should confirm this, but I believe that label may be on there because it contains lead-based solder for the fan connections. Sound right?
-
it is not just targus. i believe my antec coolpad also had this warning. i would take it with a grain of salt.
-
Targus isn't going to sell something that is potentially dangerous, and the government wouldn't allow it either. They've been selling the chill mats for years; if somebody had actually had problems from using one, they wouldn't still be on shelves. I wouldn't worry about it.

These are the same reasons why we have to put labels on hair dryers that say "don't use while sleeping" and on clothes irons that say "don't iron clothes on body" and on peanuts that say "this product contains nuts".
Somewhere, some time, someone was stupid enough to try eating the wiring/solder in their electrical device, and hurt themselves, and sued the company for millions in damages. Welcome to America.
And yes, all those labels I list above are REAL.
I believe it was George Carlin who said, "I just think we should take the warning labels off of everything and let the problem take care of itself."
Amen. -
No offense, but if you've ever lived in California they have warnings on everything. The laundry room at my old apartment building warned that it may contain cancer causing agents. It's a laundry room....get my drift -
I always get a kick out of all the warning lables in California when I go there. It's become a game of mine where I look for new ones. The best was a little sticker on the window of an In-and-Out that said something about a risk of cancer right next to and "A" rating.

It's all because of this sue-crazy country called the United States of Obesity. All fast food should have a similar label, "May cause you to gain weight ... fast"
