it's on sale at Staples Canada, so we're thinking of getting one to try it out...but if it's not worth the effort, then I won't bother. what say have you?

Look at directcanada.com if they have it.

I got the Explorer for $40 rather than $100

they do have it, but with the cost of shipping etc, it's still worth looking at getting from Staples. on top of that, if it sucks (pun intended) we can take it back with little hassle.

in any case, my original question still stands...is it worth getting? I see that it has an average of 7.2/10 approval rating on CNET, which is pretty good...but, still, I would be surprised if the majority of those people are n00bs who don't hold the whole cooling/performance equation as highly as we do here...

From suggetions from other users, most of them have recommended the Targus Chill mat. However, I opted for the notepal by cooler master which works fairly well. Brought my HD temp from 52C to 44. By I believe the Targus is worth the shot espicially if you can get it for less and be able to return it.

I bought one as an accessory when I got my old Dell Inspiron 6000. I didn't feel it really did anything so I returned it to Target.

well, we went and got one and immediately the CPU temps dropped from 68C to 52C, or so according to PC Wizard 2008. it isn't exactly silent or quiet, but the noise level isn't that bad either. will report back with further info as found. :)

The Targus Chillmat is more useful as a platform to put your laptop on in your lap than a cooler. It does take off a couple of degrees as I detailed in the cooling guide. Its biggest plus is its relative slimness so it is portable.

indeed. I look forward to seeing if I can truly mod an Antec Big Boy 200 so as to create a MASSIVE quiet cooling platform for my 5920G.

the Chill Mat went for my parents ;)

I am still waiting for a Targus Mart I got for my laptop. A temp solution i use for increased airflow is to put a hockey puck under the 4 corners. That cools my laptop down a couple of degrees.

After getting this product, I wish to add my thoughts. This pad has great cooling. My laptop keyboard is no longer hot when I type. However, if you have pets, which shed allot of hair, you will find that this fan is so powerful, it will suck the hairs in to the fan. Also, there was two circles of fine white dust. This fan is great however, and i would buy it again. I am using it on a 15.4" laptop, and it cools it fine.
