I felt the need to rant about this a bit. Yes.
Basically, I am female, and looking for a nice black bag to hold my coming laptop and notebooks when I go to college etc.
Been looking online, but yesterday I was out so I looked in different stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples) to see what kinds pf bags they had and how these looked in person. Now, while I wouldn't necessarily mind getting a plain black bag (my current schoolbag fills that description) it would nevertheless be nice to have something pretty. So I was looking at the female oriented laptop bags.
It is HARD to find something there that is black and NOT icky leather.
I noticed though, that Targus specifically does not make a single female-oriented bag that is not pink. Either it's all pink, or there is pink trimming, or there are pink insides.
Note to Targus: NOT ALL WOMEN LIKE PINK.
I personally dislike the color. Several bags I might have considered became NO's when I saw the pinkness. Further, I think it's really patronizing and lazy of them to say "if it's for women -- eh, just make it pink". Plus they add these weird breast cancer pins. Cos you know, the fact that Targus supports the fight against BREAST CANCER is totally going to make me want to buy their bags. Why don't they have prostate cancer support pins for men then? Why aren't the 'male' bags blue?
In conclusion, I won't be buying a Targus bag if I can help it, not even one of their 'male' bags because they suck. Yes.

Thanks for that page...but dun trust them. Like those Solitare Bags LOOK all black, but in the store the inside was totally pink XP
though the one you suggested does look nice...but I'm mad at Targus XD -
Look at Crumpler bags as well.
www.crumplerusa.com -
The crumpler website confuses me. A lot. :/
-
Lol... that was one of the funniest rants I have read in a long time. It reminds me of something a friend of mine would rant about. I wish you good luck in finding a good bag though.
-
I don't know. . . a few of those bags from Targus in the link above looked like they might have "potential". Maybe look around in a few more stores for different models of the above Targus bags or other brands before "stabbing" anybody. lol I know that when I was first looking for a bag and only went to 3 stores around my area, I too was a little down but the more I looked around and then searching ebay, I saw there was more bags styles and features than I knew what to do with.
-
It's not so much that I'm dissapointed at not finding a bag I like, since I am really picky, but more annoyed at Targus for stereotyping women by slapping pink on so many of their 'women bags' and adding breast cancer pins for no good reason when they dont put the equivalent on 'male' bags.

You might check out Roadwired ( www.roadwired.com)
They have lightweight bags, with loads of pockets, attachements which can hold your cell phone, keys, etc. Mine even has a concealable water bottle holder.
I purchased the Skooba bag. It's black nylon, has a touch of blue (or other color of your choice, even pink) and it's well made.
Hope this might help.
(by the way, I was able to view the Skooba bag at a local camera store before I decided to purchase it, so they may be available for you to see physically in a store near you)
Good luck!

"You bring the beer, we will bring the bags" kind of slogan is weird too -
Thanks for the suggestions yall. Shall look into em^^
And there SHOULD be a prostate cancer ribbon for men. Lotsa men die from that too (possibly because if i'm not mistaken getting checked may involve the doctor examining your anus 0__o) -
Cassandra022,
I assumed you have checked my thread at top with links to lots of bag manufacturers (check sig.).
That said. I'll scan some of the links. I know I have seen some nice black bags that are not necessarily leather. Also how big a bag do you want, what size laptop. Style, messenger, sling, tote,etc... Give me whatever details you are looking for, see what I can dig up for you. Honestly if you want style often avoiding the Big names (Targus, Victronix, Sumdex, Kensington) is the way to go as those manufacturers are well, bleah.
Oh check the review links, popwuping and gadgeteer are good.

Cassie is a liar. Despite Cassies angry words, Cassie did indeed buy http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=TLB001 today. In Cassie's defence there really was nothing better. ShinyGoBonkers needed a bag that didn't murder Cassie's back.
...it has no pink... -
I think Cassie has "Ricky Henderson'' itus. But glad it all worked out for ya and you were able to find something you liked.
-
just kiddin.
Did you at least kick the salesman or something?
And "ShinyGoBonkers" is the best name for a laptop I've heard in a while... -
Nuu, no kicking of teh salesmen XP
and thanks^^ -
What's feminine about a bag? Does it come with a make-up bag or something? I never got that...a bag is a bag. I've gottne girl bags that are just like any other man bag...except it might be a different color scheme/material. If they didn't have color options, there would be no difference with most brands.

wtf is up with crumpler's naming? Do I want a six million dollar home or a sinking barge.

Oh god, I agree (except for the leather part, I enjoy leather). Although I'm female, there is very little about me that is feminine. It is very hard to find a black bag, free of pink trim, which also is not overtly feminine OR an aesthetic nightmare. I finally found a bag which I loved, but only had a flap (no zipper/tight closure), which would have let rain in. Seeing as my laptop goes everywhere with me, not a viable option. I've given up looking... let me know if you come up with anything good. -
There is such a thing as a femenine bag, to me at least. Perhaps moreso it could be said the kind of bag most men wouldn't want as opposed to a bag most women would? Like I'm sure most men would not neccesarily choose a tote bag as their first laptop carrying option, especially one shaped like a purse (again, not something that interests me, really, but definitly aimed at the female market) I think there is a certain...style, that appeals to me as a female. Like, I dunno, I'm sort of a weird combination of girly and un-girly but when I was in the store with my father, he was giving me suggestions of what was a practical, sturdy bag, and my response was 'uh, no. That's bulky and ugly.' My thing is -- there are ways to make things look femenine without getting pink and frilly. There's such a thing as a subtely of style. It's easy to just make something pink and say -- there, have it woman! If you can make something nice goign beyond that, then you're cool.
And yeah, it is hard. Dunno, the one I got yesterday was a sort of best option I could find in real life, and I wanted one right away because by bag I'd had was not a laptop bag, did not protect the laptop at all, barely even fit it, and was giving me very not cool back pains. It's not bad. Smaller then I would like, honestly. Organization of it a bit odd and not necessarily perfectly convenient the way I use it. Still heavy though more comfortable. On the other hand it's not fugly, protects the laptop fairly well, and can be worn as a packback or a vertical messanger bag, and I CAN shove all my things in there with some effort. So yeah, it will do.
There was a big keychain. I gave it to my mother. She didn't want it much either, lol. -
I like tote-bags, more really mail bag looking things. But that's just me.
Targus should be Stabbed
