I noticed the Creative Labs Inspire T3100 2.1 Speaker System on sale for $20 with shipping and was wondering how are these speakers? Specifically, how are they compared to the Logitech z2300, x230, z-4; and the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 in terms of fidelity first, thump second?

The Logitech Z2300s and Z-4s, and Klipsch ProMedia will sound much better than the T3100 in my opinion. The Z2300s will have much better bass.

So what are the z-4s considered as? A z2300-lite or an upgrade to the x230?

Go for a used set of ProMedia 2.1. Im looking for a set as well but not too seirously atm until I get my desktops again. Best sounding 2.1 speakers and because of its age it can be had for pretty cheap too. I would guess the Z-4 being slightly better but not by much than the X-230

I'd go with the Pro Media 2.1 system, Best sounding for the price.

You're shopping for $20 speakers and asking about fidelity? Add a couple more zeros...

From the fidelity point of view, I was wondering if the speakers preformed respectably compared to the others. Bang for the buck is the game. Clear, well rounded sound (which doesn't necessarily mean only loud bass).

I looked on other threads and the two speakers that are most recommended are the z2300 and ProMedia 2.1. I was wondering if there were other solid choices by other companies like Creative or Altec Lansing (like the I-Trigue L3800 and FX4021) since I haven't read much feedback on other manufacturers other than Logitech and Klipsch. I would listen to some myself but some of these systems are hard to come by in my area.

I think for it's price, the X-230 is the best. No doubt the Z-2300 and ProMedias are better, but they also cost about $80 more (not going by retail). I got my Z-2300s for around $112 shipped, could have gotten the X-230s for around $50 shipped. I wish I got a ProMedia now because I don't even use all the bass on the Z-2300 (it has ridiculous bass), ProMedias supposedly have better mid ranges, and the subwoofer on the Z-2300 is just TOO MUCH. But at the time I bought them, I couldn't find a comparable price on the ProMedias, closest I found, AFTER I bought the Z-2300s, was about $20 more.

As for the Z-4s, there's an ad in...Circuit City this week I believe, going for $50 or so. I'd say that's pretty good...though it includes a $20 mail in rebate.
