I have a pair of 2.1 Altec Lansing speakers for my laptop and every time my cell phone rings it makes that incredibly annoying noise (hopefully some of you know what I am talking about) is there anyway to stop that from happening? I have had my speakers for about three years but its gotten so annoying I have stopped using them!

this is the nature of GSM phones, they operate at a lower freq then CDMA ie. Sprint and verizon...

there is nothing you can do but move your phone further away or change carriers, all GSM phones interfere with speaker systems....

its really bad here at work with all the gov't employees rockin a blackberry, my soundsytems go crazy, and people complain that they have this wierd noise... i tell em to turn there phones completly off and it will go away, but god forbid they are with out there phone for an hour, all hell breaks lose...

it isnt really interfiering with the speakers as much as it is the amplifer for the speakers...if you can goto a store and go to the stereo section or computer speaker section, turn the speakers on to test em then make a call, buy the speakers that dont make noise...

my current set up, is Klipsch 2.1 on my pc at home, when my buddy comes over with his gsm phone i dont get any issues, also on my old home theatre receiver i used to have issues befor i upgraded to a pioneer receiver...

same thing in the car, the stock amp id have issues of the ticking with people talking on phones around me, then i upgraded my amp and no more problems...

    good luck

My speakers are a good 3 or 4 feet away from my phone most of the time, I can be 10 feet away and it will still happen........Well, I guess I will have to buy new speakers if I want it to stop :(

that has nothing to do with your speakers, like another poster already stated, it is the GSM frequency. If you buy another pair or ten pairs, the same thing will happen. its the phone!

Actually I did a little research and the speaker wires are at fault, the noise is caused by the GSM frequency, but only because the wires are not adequately shielded from the interference. If you buy a properly shielded set of wires the problem can be solved. However, I would have no idea how to go about replacing wires and it sounds like more trouble than it is worth, next time I will buy a higher quality set of speakers with the proper shielding.

Right is called EMI radiation. Its very low and can't cause you any harm, but can cause some speakers, like said above, poorly shield ones to emit a noise like that.

Archaic, putting your phone in a shielded bag would render the phone inoperable... you may as well turn it off.

I used to have this problem with my old PC speakers (low end Jazz) but my Logitechs are much better shielded.

It is the phone causing it, but shielded speaker cabling and speakers will prevent the noise. I use AudioQuest Black Mamba audio interconnects which are very well shielded. My ADAM Audio A7 speakers are as well. A less expensive shielded speaker is the NHT M-00 (which is also about the best 2.0 desktop speakers money can buy).

Small trick: twist your speaker cable. A few twists/ft should do the trick ;)
