I'm looking to get an external hard drive but I hear about them failing quite often. Any ideas on which one is the best or do they all just suck?

Could buy a hard drive and a case, then if the hard drive goes bad, replace it.

Zynet , never used it but seen it and its above all others ,
aluminium , mounted HD with screws and overall nice design .

Only problem you can't find the damn thing anywhere , I even contacted Zynet to buy directly , paying for shipping more then for the item but then they asked for a wired transfer and I called it off ( 30$ just for that ) .

    Pity .

p.s. If you find one please let me know , also their 5.25" model .

I'm using what used to be called the IceCube drives (see this site http://www.macsense.com.au/apple_mac_pc_storage_icecube.htm) and have yet to have any problems, oh other than when I plugged the wrong power supply into it, that fried the hard drive, but that was my fault, other than that, been working fine for the last 2 years with no issues (admitedly I only turn the drives on when I actually need data from them)

Basically I just buy whatever size hard drive I need, plug it in and off I go, works just great (and that site was only for looks, I'm sure they can be had for cheaper than that).

when you fried the hard drive did you lose all the data on it?
just did that myself - all the wires inside the casing on the chip board were melted through - and very worried i've lost a lot of important files. Hoping the disk itself was unaffected though and will buy a new casing for it as soon as I can. Will just have to cross fingers until then.

Hmm... I've had a problem related to this. I had a bytec aluminum 3.5 hd enclosure. I had a maxtor 160gig 7200rpmg hd in it. It worked perfectly a for a little over a year, then the harddrive started to click. At first it was everyonce in a while, but it grew. Now its to the point where Windows has delayed write errors constantly and the harddrive can't even spin up to speed. I pulled the HD and put in a desktop and it worked fine. I looked this up and found out that the combination firewire usb chipset was the problem. I can't remeber the exact name but I think it was an oxford chipset. I'll look it up later.

    I have a 80 gig Acomdata. http://www.acomdata.com

Mine looks to be a new 2006 model I guess. 7200rpm USB 2.0 drive, it runs cool and can't even hear its running. Also got a 3 year warrenty from the store I bought it from for 30 bucks which is a great deal.
