Hi there, I believe that there are many people just as me that for the past fell months and years had being spending a lot of money and time shopping for new backpacks.
The thing is, I'm a student living in London. What I'm telling you with that is that basically by being a student as you can imagine, you carry some bloody heavy books, a laptop (15.4') and more thing in it, and by being in London means that here we take crowed tubes, buses, walks a lot. Moreover it rains almost every single day. Even though with all theses things I still have more particular uses for it. My backpack needs to be strong enough to heavy things amd be quite big because I use for city breaks, small holidays, carrying water (in the side pocket), and be flexible to be placed in lookers. When I get home I used to trough at the floor (of course without my laptop). And more, sometimes the backpack is used hanging around through just one stripe over stressing the stripes seams and the junctions which hugely helps to destroy the bag as a whole. So because of all those factors all my backpacks end up, looking terrible when it comes in light colours, because of the dust, rain, filthy floors and lookers, by holding through on stripe it starts to tear the stripe itself or the cloth on the top or even the seam. I carry Uni books and my laptop so it needs to hold at least 10kg easily, and big enough to hold some trousers and t-shirts for a eventual city break. And stuffing it with cloths the whole thing forces the zippiers which breaks it and sometimes blocks/ breaks.
That said its easy to say that for the past 2 years Ive spent more than £160 buying backpacks and I've never found a really good and reliable one that makes through one whole year successfully.
So I've tried many brands and the things that makes my beloved backpacks to live longer, like using a messenger bag for a laptops, which helps. BUT it doesn't fit for me. I need a real backpack period. Even though sometimes I use a msg bag.
To summarize which bag is tough enough to survive a student lifestyle in London, stuffed with heavy books, laptop, cloths, MUST BE weather proof (heavy rain), needs to have great and reliable zippiers, be a quite big to be consider to be taken in city breaks instead of a proper travelling bag, external water holder, external pocket (1 is enough, 1+ is fine), at least 2 internal divisions (1 for laptop 15.4' screen). Needs to be a backpack. I take that up and down non stop 365/y, so one of the most important thing is that it cannot destroy your column and must be comfortable ( that's really crucial).
I know it might be a quite complicated but to be honest I've being googling, looking back to my experiences, asking friends around, looks for backbacks shops, and the real thing which will be my "girls eyes" had never crossed my way so far. And I bet I'm not the only one out there have this issue.
btw - Design is a +
So any recommendation?
All the best Beto

Check out some of the bags from tombihn.com. They make extremely durable bags, but they can be quite pricey. Also check out slappa.com.

I'm very satisfied with Booq. They're expensive but excellent quality, features and design.
Also, in London you have a nice VictorInox store where I bought a nice messenger bag and they also have nice backpacks.
