I'm curious as to why there just aren't Bluetooth gaming mice, but RF gaming mice do exist. Is there more lag inherent to Bluetooth? More power consumption? Is there just not the level of saturation in the Bluetooth market to justify the release of such a mouse?

It just seems like Bluetooth has been a standard in laptops for quite some time now, yet the most purchased accessory for a laptop still has so few options for Bluetooth (and no real options on the high end, gaming market). If the technology just isn't capable of creating such a mouse, laptops need to just come with internal RF receivers. This dongle business is so crude.

bluetooth is slow. which causes slower responce time. the "gaming" hardware boasts about its ability to lower lag to a non-distrubing level. bluetooth is not a tech for transmiting for long amounts of time.

Ah. Then I fully support the idea of having built in RF receivers in laptops from now on. Dongles are clunky, and a waste of a usb slot, but a total necessity at this point.

Is this problem inherent, or has there simply been no need market wise to try and improve the speed?

I have a feeling a lack of a market has something to do with it, buckeyefan, because you figure those looking for a gaming mouse are a only one segment of the market and those looking for a bluetooth mouse are another small piece so the combination of those two is even smaller, so the cost of R&D is not likely to be recouped.

God, I hate OSU. What the hell's a buckeye anyway.
PSU all the way. 10/27/07 8:00, student section, can't wait

got a bit off topic there, just couldn't let that one go

    Sorry for going off topic,
A Buckeye is a nut that looks like a Buck's eye.
I am going to be a freshman and have gotten season tickets, but I have no clue where they will be.

    On topic however,
Not only are gamers that use bluetooth a small portion, i would guess many still prefer wired mice. They may use bluetooth for other things.

I'm starting to think bluetooth is useless except for cell phone headsets. All the headphones with bluetooth are $50+ and the few mice out there for it are plain two button mice.

    I'm glad I saved $30 on my T61 for something I can't find anything I like.

Get the microsoft wireless laser mouse 8000. Its the best BT mouse I've ever used and its good enough for gaming. Super smooth and super responsive.

I have a Logitech V270 bluetooth mouse and it runs with no lag at all. Other people will say the same. Lag is not inherent in bluetooth. Some bluetooth modules don't play well with other devices, or your drivers are not up to date, or your mouse is not working properly, or you have too many wireless signals around your place, etc. etc. etc. The technology itself works.

To that end, make sure you have the latest bluetooth drivers. If the mouse you buy has a program to run with it, RUN IT. My V270 mouse does not work properly unless I have the logitech software running as well. Most of all, DO NOT use the windows XP bluetooth stack. Most problems with newer bluetooth devices stem from it.

Bluetooth is useful to those of us (like me) who have a PDA. I actually have a Treo 650 which I can sync with my laptop so that I have all my appointments, contacts, etc identical on both. It can be done with a cable but that's a pain in the ass to fish out of wherever it is, plug in, and so on and so forth. I don't have bluetooth on my current laptop but will have it on my next one (due in early August) and I'm looking forward to syncing at the press of a button instead of fiddling with cables.

Some cell phones that are not quite PDAs but have some advanced functionality can also benefit from it.

Another thing Bluetooth can be used for is to remote control playback on a laptop. No, it's not a must but it is a nice thing to have. I'm not planing to buy a remote for my upcoming laptop but I've found a piece of software that can make my Treo emulate a bluetooth keyboard. I'm going to try it. If it works, yay! If not, meh... I'll just get off my lazy ass when I watch a movie on the lappy.

Just bought the MS 8000 mouse today, hope to have it some time next week. I hope its as good as some ppl have been saying.

Would have gone for the Logitech v270, but I need those extra buttons.

Currently have the Logitech v610, great mouse, use all the buttons, but the problem is the RF signal interfering with the router about 2 ft away. When I'm downloading at high speeds, the cursor is erratic!

Hopefully the MS bt 8000 presenter mouse will eliminate that.
