I've heard a lot about cat leaps and crossovers. Anyone have any experience with them. What cables would I need to get full 2560x1440?

What laptop do you have? Spec's?

Be prepared as your performance will drop dramatically.

The bigger the resolution is, the more (or more precisely, the more VRAM) it's gonna need. I can't even find any bench done on resolutions higher than 1920*1080, but expect the same difference as, say, from the 14xx*7xx to the 1920*1080. If you're gonna use it with a laptop, you should make sure your gpu will actually be able to handle it, as there's nothing as disappointing as buying something you won't be able to use as good as expected. ;-)

If you are going to get a Catleap I recommend getting on the waiting list for the 1440p, IPS, 120 HZ overclockable ones from this place, 120hz.NET - Source for 120hz 1440p Monitors - Latest News. The only one's being made right now in the entire world, it'll set you back $400 or so but that's an extremely good price for what you're getting. Though you will need a beefy computer to run games at 1440p but it's still a great investment and you won't need that good of a laptop to do everyday things on it as far as I know.

Wow I completely missed putting any info. M17x r4 with 7970m.
And I was thinking of a crossover. -

You will need a Display Port to Dual link DVI active adapter to be able to output 2560x1440.
I recommend getting one with a scaler, just in case you'll want to play a game that your laptop won't be able to run it at the monitor's native resolution. -
Any recommendations on where to find a mini display port to dual link dvi adapter? I checked amazon but only saw single link

May get my hand on one of these, just to see how good it is. My 7970M should be able to handle this well. But the probability of getting dead pixels kinda annoys me though.

I used to game from my Asus G73 (Radeon HD 5870M) on my 40in tv without an issue. I was running 1080p (1920 × 1080) and would play battlefield 3 on medium/high settings. It could play it at ultra, but I was playing online and wanted no lag. I think it should be possible with that setup, but then again, 2560x1440 is a big step up from 1080p

You will need a dual link adapter for those that make exclusively with Dual link DVI, there are some made with displayport which cost more (I believe they go for around ~400 iirc).
The adapter range from 60s- 100 depending where you get them.,
Thinking about a Korean 27in monitor for my gaming laptop
