Just wondering what size case a should buy. I have a 15.4" Widescreen T61. I've heard that you should buy a 17" case because the Thinkpads are a little bigger. But I don't want a bag that doesn't securely hold my notebook.

any and all advice is appreciated

    thanks

a 15inch case or a 15.4inch case should be fine

The 15.4" T61 actually has, what i believe, one of the slimmer profiles in its class. Do you have the 6-cell battery or 9-cell battery because that'll make the largest difference in your decision. With the 9-cell battery, you going to need a case that can hold a notebook with the depth of 11". With the standard 6-cell, any case which will hold a depth of 10" will do.

It does make a difference if you have a 9 cell or 6 cell battery, make sure you find the exact size of the notebook sleeve inside the bag and compare it to your notebook. I've noticed that a few notebook bags at stores are way to tight for the 14" length even if they are rated for 15.4" notebooks.

Right now I got a eBags downloader backpack thats rated to fit 14" x 11" x 2" and the top if a bit tight but it fits alright, if you like a little wiggle room then make sure you get a quarter of a inch or more.

Depends on what kind of protection you want for it.

I have a 15.4" widescreen T60, and I can fit it in the medium sized Otter Box that they sell on the site. It also fits with the 9 cell battery, and is rather secure. The only thing that might be a turn off for it is that it is rather heavy with the notebook inside. However, with the notebook, you should have enough space to put your charger and such inside without worries of having it being squashed. The OtterBox also comes with runners in order for you to have a snug fit on the laptop, and are very easy to remove (they're velcro, so you can pull them off at anytime you want.)

Well one thing to keep in mind is that a lot of laptop cases that "Fits laptops with 15 inch screens" were designed for standard 4:3 displays. A laptop with a 15 inch widescreen display will very often have just enough extra width to not fit correctly in a "15 inch screen" bag, and people move up to a 17 inch size. Also remember if you have the battery hanging out the back, you should keep that in mind when getting interior bag or sleeve dimensions.
