    Hi,

I need to buy three accessories for my laptop which I will be using in a college dorm.

First, I need a USB Flash Drive. 4GB or 8GB should suffice. I just want a good one but at a low price. I was looking at Sandisk Cruzer Titanium on Amazon.com 4GB for about $20.

Next, I think it would be a good idea to invest in a surge protector in case something goes wrong in the college dorm. Do you guys know what a good but inexpensive brand is? Belkin any good?

Finally, I need a USB Printer Cable to connect my HP printer to the laptop. Any idea on a good but inexpensive brand once again? I saw a Belkin one on amazon.com for about $5.

    Thanks!

Just commenting on your finds, The Cruzer Titanium is a good drive, with good transfer speeds, would be a good deal. Also Belkin is a generally good accessories brand.

i got the titanium cruzer 8GB off ebay for like $30 or so. great drive. comes with u3 software and i've seen transfer speeds in the upper 20's.

surge protectors are good, cheap, "insurances."

check cheap shopping sites like ebay, ubid, and buy.com. those may have what you are looking for cheap.

Flash drives are more about price then anything. If you take good care of them they won't break.

found a printer cable on ebay for 5 bucks as well, amazon is good but usually has high shipping. Check around.

surge protectors can be a good idea, but it is very unlikely that a surge will occur.

yes belkin is a good brand.

    @ the OP

I think others have already answered your questions about a flash drive and surge protector.

For your printer cable, I'd just to to your local Radio Shack if you have one close by. I buy most of my cables from them because even if the price is a little higher. I usually end up saving a little because there's not shipping. I can also see what I'm getting in person that way, so I know for sure I'm getting the right thing.

You might want to consider a voltage regulator or UPS instead of a surge protector, depending on your area.

    Thank you all for helping.

As for surge protector, I also do not think there will be a surge in my dorm room. However, a friend of mine that had classes there said there are 8 outlets per dorm room (so my dorm roomate and I have to share). I was thinking maybe to get a small surge protector with a few extra outlets so I can have some more outlets.

yeah if your going to get a "powerbar" with extra outlets, you may as well go the extra mile and get it with a surge protector. That's what my university is telling me to do on the "to bring" list :p

Also i have a quick question. If there ever is a surge and power goes out, without a surge protector and a laptop plugged in, could it be damaged? or will it simply just switch to battery without any damage being potentially caused.

I would've thought a surge would just blow all the breakers rather than damaging any equipment.

Yes, if there is a surge and your laptop is plugged in (without a surge protector), it is very possible that it will be damaged.
