I was always under the assumption that putting a laptop off axis, as in tilting it vertically, or horizontally was something you shouldn't do. I thought it had something to do with the hhd heads scratching the platter. I see a lot of people titling their laptops on stands and such and wanted to know if this will damage you're laptop in any way. Thanks.

Excess harsh movement will damage heads, leaving it stationary on an incline will not.

As long as you don't suddenly/quickly move your laptop, it won't be a problem. HDDs are designed to operate smoothly in any orientation - that's why they're often mounted either horizontally or vertically in desktops. However, they are shock-susceptible. The head can damage the platters if it's not parked, if you, for example, drop the laptop or if it falls off its notebook stand.

its more like... well now you know the very tangible extent to your laptops build quality.
Most DVD drives will scrape on the inside and you can hear them when you rotate a laptop quickly. But if it does it just from flexing and being picked up from that side... then thats one cheap laptop.

Hey, thanks for clearing that up. I was planning on either making, or buying a stand. Just wanted to make sure.

I like the wine cork idea. The best part of that diy stand is the building of it.
