I bought a timbuk2 commute xl recently and i'm thinking about returning it. The main reason is because there are no zippers and i'm afraid of water getting in when it rains.

I'm considering getting the Tom Bihn super ego instead. From some pictures that I have seen, the super ego looks pretty big. Will this bag look awkward? Is this bag good for school and work? I need to carry books and my laptop, Z61m.

The Super Ego is a BIG bag. But if you have several books you want to carry it's the bag to have. I think wether or not a bag is awkward is more a function of the person carrying the bag really. I know some people look awkward with just a handbag and others can carry full on backpack and not look funny. I think it's just a matter of what a person can handle really. Or if you feel funny it might take some getting used to then it never seems wrong after that...???

I added a Horizontal Brain Cell for my 17" laptop. Which now pretty much fills the laptop section of the bag. You can also use the soft sided sleeve too. I like the HBC because I can carry just my laptop in that if I do not need too many other do-dads. I get a spiral notebook, my zen xtra MP3, player, a headset a couple pens and that is about all in the external pouch on the HBC.

The Super Ego carries EVERYTHING. I actually have to be careful what I add to the bag. If you do have a heavy load I would really suggest adding the Ultimate Shoulder Strap...I did and it is sooooo comfy! Actually even with a smaller to medium load...no more shoulder-hickey's!! ;)

Have you looked at the new bag which is called the Ego like they say it's a smaller verison of the Super Ego. It might be a better fit for your needs?

If you email the folks at Tom Bihn they are WONDERFUL at helping you select a bag. They do know their stuff.

If ya go with a Bihn Bag you will LOVE it...they are not cheap but then again neither is the laptop.

    Thanks for the reply.

I looked at the Ego but the HBC that fits the Z61m doesn't fit in the Ego.
The super ego is about almost the same size as the timbuk2 commute xl.

well, darn, then yeah the Super Ego pretty much the only option. That or their Empire Builder bag. I read a few reviews about the Empire Builder and it seems like a really flexible bag plus it meets airline carry-on requirements...at least last time I looked at the site it did...but given the way those regs change hour to hour, who knows anymore.

BTW what colors were you thinking of? I have an Olive HBC and the Black/Kiwi/Cork Super Ego...good gawd I really have gone over the edge...there was a time I would tell myself...it just a BAG...hehehehe...well I am paying my better half for the closets she filled up with "things" from Nordstrom...I am honestl scared of those closets!

I am actually gonna be in Seattle in either late March or early April and am definitely going to visit the factory store. I am weak and will likely add another bag...sigh I might have become addicted...well, gotta have a hobby. ;) But am looking forward to seeing all the various bags in person...and maybe even Riley!!!

Now back to your bag, I can say the Super Ego is not likely let in rain. The top flap actually fits over the top of the front compatment and it would take a significant monsoon to get water inside. I am going to grab a bottle of their fabric waterproofing stuff when I am there just to make sure mine works OK for the 6-days/year of rain we seem to get down here anymore...

wait somewhere on the Blog portion of the site I think they show someone with the SuperEgo...that might help?

Just came back to add a bag that I forgot...no this is a HUGE bag...the Aeronaut. I think I was confusing it with the Empire Builder bag when I mentioned the airline stuff...oops??? ;)
