I'm awaiting delivery of a new laptop, and I'm terrible for wanting to keep my hardware clean and reducing the risk of damage as much as possible - there's nothing worse than grubby hardware making you wonder what exactly has been going on around it!

I've noticed on many laptops - particularly the models with poor plastics used - that the fascias, particularly on the touchpads plastic can show wear very quickly.

My particular laptop isn't overly popular, so finding 3rd party accessories isn't easy - items are non-existent. Which led me to wonder, would a touchpad still work with a mobile phone screen protector on-top?

It's a multitouch pad, so I'm guessing it's similar technology (although cheaper) to that used in phones. So I thought perhaps I can cut up a screen protector and place it on. But thought it worthwhile asking before I order them.

It should work but may inhibit it to some degree.

I would just use a mouse though :D

Thanks for replying. The strange thing is I'll be using a mouse 90% of the time, but still care more about my computers hygiene more than my own! Cheers, Vicious.

I've done things simialar(actually cover the entire laptop with that carpet cover plastic) and everything worked fine. I didn't cover the keyboard but the palm rest and the touch pad.

    Hah. Thanks Syndrome.

I was considering doing pretty much the same, not the carpet plastic thing (a bit too creative for me) but the rest and touch pad. I was hoping somebody would pass through that has tried something similar. Cheers.

i covered the entire bottom half(palmrest, touchpad, etc.) with 3m dinoc carbon vinyl to keep from wearing out the finish of my m17xr3.

    touchpad still worked fine.

If you want real durability and are willing to pay a little bit extra, get 3M Clear Bra. Its built for car bumpers and touchscreens/touch pads will still work though it. I put it on all of my mp3 players and phones.
