I have just bought an external hard drive, Seagate Free Agent Go 120gb, which when connected to my laptop works fine. Problem is when I plug it into my old desk top (does not have a 2.0 USB port, it doesn't seem to recognise it.

My question is, are all 2.0 USB back compatible with the older style?

    Thanks in advance.

Do you have any anti-virus software running on the desktop? I had similar problems with a Dell desktop which went away when I deleted the McAfee software that came with it.

If the OS is pre Win 98 SE (with all the service packs) your desktop may need a driver to reckognize the drive. Also if your OS is pre XP and the drive is NTFS it won't see it. USB 1.1 on the desktop shouldn't be a problem.
