    Hey all,

I have a Buffalo HD-PV500U2 USB 2 external HDD. This drive has a feature where it'll power down the drive after some idle time while the drive is still connected to a machine.

I want to take out the drive and move it to a USB 3 enclosure, but I can't find any standalone enclosures that have the aforementioned feature.

Does such a thing exist, or is my Google-fu just that weak?

That feature may be hard coded in the drive electronics. If that is true then that feature should work in an enclosure if you can find one. If that feature is on a separate electronics board then it may not go along with the drive. Try contacting the manufacturer of your drive and ask them.

I haven't done any heavy research on this so I can't say for sure, but what I have found indicates that the capability you refer to is not incorporated with bare enclosures.

Buffalo is good at offering this type of convenient features and included backup software but they are also one of the most expensive (which is why I stopped looking). They were the first to bring 3.0 externals to the market.
