Any experience with these? Meaning, you have USB 3 on you computer, and the USB 3 drive? I am really into portability, as this will have to share space in a bag with a big honkin 17 inch laptop.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your reply Arc...+ Rep for you!
I was hoping for more replies, but nonetheless, I checked it out. I like it. I am going to go for the 1TB version though.

    I have this: Newegg.com - KINGWIN ATK-25U3-BK Aluminum 2.5" Black USB 3.0 External Enclosure

It's an external enclosure. The good thing about it is that it uses a USB 3.0 to USB 3.0 plug not the Type-B. I had a horrible experience when I had the type-B plug, lasted for 2 months, over time it became loose to a point that my laptop is not even detecting it. Also you will be able to upgrade your HDD over time without losing the USB 3.0 capability.

EDIT: The enclosure is smaller than the WD External Drive on the 2nd post.

Best Buy stores are currently selling the WD 3.0 USB 750gb at $79 + tax. Got one myself and works fine so far. No loose connections at the ends...looks like they fixed it due to past complaints.

I've purchased a couple of the Seagate Go Flex 1.5 T USB 3.0 / 2.0 Portable HDD at Costco at $ 139 each. The unit is just slightly thicker than the typical portable HDD, in order to accomodate the 1.5 T. Currently just using as 2.0 until I receive my new notebook.

I wouldn't normally purchase the larger capacity for general use, except these are for archiving data (video and photos) and storing in Bank Safe Deposit Boxes.

These higher capacity drives obviously have 2 disks, thus the thicker dimensions. If you do something like this, storing as archive, be sure to spin them up on a regular basis to help ensure that they'll work when you need 'em.

I use a Seagate GoFlex Pro 500GB with USB 3.0. Mine came with a nice carrying case similar to that of one you slide your phone into. The material won't scratch and it fits the drive nice and tight.

Arlcrane I gotta ask as well. Why are you quoting yourself and responding to it? I'm sure the mods won't like that to much. Besides you can always just say everything you need to in multiple paragraphs in one post.

"Be sure to spin them up on a regular basis to help ensure that they'll work when you need 'em"

What? You're responding to your own posts and then giving nonsensical advice. Use the edit button instead of triple posting off of your own content. Spinning up a hard drive regularly has little effect on prolonging its life. I think we're being trolled here.

Toshiba Canvio Plus is a great drive. I have the 1TB version, and it's really no bigger than the WD Passports. Only problem I have is the USB 3.0 cable is really rigid. $100 at Newegg.
