As the title suggests, I am looking for a USB hub...at least 4 ports (most are anyway), more ports the better, but of course there are price constrains.

No more than $30 (£15) would be great :) (Will be purchased in the UK)

    Key points/questions

    - Would it be better for the hub to be connected to an existing USB port (for data transfer) and another uses another USB port (for power)? Do they exist?

    - I am running, cooler, Keyboard, mouse, sound card, all from USB :p Also I will be running my external hdds and controllers. So it sorta power hungry.

    - Mustn't be too big, because I travel alot.

    - It should at least ''look'' like a decent product... :p (yes to do care about looks to an extent)

    - USB 2.0 (well...yeah...)

    Thanks for any suggestions! :D

apparently i heard about this USB hub actually damaging your hardware, even the one with external powered one...

that soundcard might have definite problem with hubs like this...

however, i cannot confirm that this is true.. but apparently i heard enought complaint that i dare not try one for myself.. i avoid buying these hubs.. just my opinions..

maybe some expresscard/pcmia card be the better bet?

Well I wasn't planning on plugging in the most important ones into the hub...those would be connected directly to my notebook, its more for external hdds and flash drives... :)

Any source on the possible damages it might cause? PCMCIA...thats taken up by wireless card...LOL :p

If u are using big external drives, you might need a powered one from belkin or some other place. If that's not very important, get a normal one.May be you could go to a local store at your place and find some.

ive got one of these http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/notebook_products/usb_hubs/devices/3048&cl=au,en

Great so far, no problems for the last 5 months. I use it for my external 2.5" HD and laptop cooler so it doesnt use up the power of the notebook. It doesnt show the AC adapter in the photos on the link.

No USB hubs will not wreck your laptop, havent heard of such thing. Though ive heard of plugging in too much USB devices that drain the notebooks power too much can cause issues

I run my external soundcard, wireless mouse, external drives, etc etc on my hub and have no problems whatsoever. Its just extra USB slots, it cant do any damage to your hardware. If there isnt enough power to run it (ie multiple external drives) they just dont connect

Which USB hub do you have? :)
