I have a year abroad coming up, and I want to grab some USB speakers to go with my laptop. I'd like some that are quite thin and lightweight, but also sound somewhat decent (as much as USB speakers can do, anyway). Does anyone have any recommendations?
Right now I'm looking at either the Logitech V20
V20 Notebook Speakers
Or the Creative N400
Buy Creative N400 | Speakers | Creative Labs Online Store (UK)
I know I can't expect anything too special, but powered speakers aren't really an option. If dual-USB speakers exist that are a bit more powerful, I'd definately consider them.
Thanks

I'm a massive creative fan so i'd take them,
Also the signal to noise on the creative speakers is higher (from specification though) then the logitechs,
Both are good makes, but as you say its hard to say,

This video looks like the v20's are awesome,

They're not USB, but I recommend the ChillPill:
They plug into a regular 3.5mm jack, but they're powered by their own internal battery, which is rechargeable via USB. They're very compact, but they sound pretty good all things considered, especially when you open them up all the way. All the wires (USB charging line, 3.5mm line, etc.) are retractable and integrated into the speakers themselves, so you literally don't have to carry anything else.
There's also a knockoff brand called Tweakers, which are slightly cheaper and are pretty much the exact same thing. -
Those look appealing indeed, and a quick Google search seems to reveal that they actually have half-decent bass, which is appealing.
For comparison, I am currently using an Inspire T10. I might even just email Creative and ask if I can purchase a power adaptor for the country I am going to, but I'm just seeing what my options are. -
DUDE...HP MINI SPEAKERS!!!
Amazon.com: HP USB Mini Speakers: Electronics
They look small but DAMN do they sound GOOD!!! They get loud as sh!t and have very good bass...Ive own quite a few USB power speakers and these are by far the best Ive ever heard and they are TINY too.
Good luck man, but I highly recommend you check these out for real! -
Harman Kardon SoundSticks II.
The speakers themselves are thin and lightweight, however the subwoofer... not so much. Now that I reread your post I see you're looking for something portable... but I feel like I'll leave this here because these speakers don't get enough attention =) -
Been looking for some usb speakers myself. The Chill Pills and the HP mini speakers both look great and have some nice reviews. Thanks! I might pick up the HP's. People seem to comment a lot on how great they sound for their size and are very affordable.

Wow thanks for the suggestion. I just picked up the HP's for only $25 and for their size and price they are truly impressive!

I've noticed that many people ask these questions. But from the responses I've seen so far, it's virtually impossible to give a recommendation that fits since there's so much subjectivity and variety involved with musical taste. A better question would be to set some perimeters like size, style, manufacturer, price, etc. The more information you provide, the better the suggestions will be

It's not USB, but they an internal battery which they claim lasts up to 11hours.
They sound quite good. -
I have found Crystal USB Desktop Speakers to be a good find. They are the smallest audiophile performance stereo USB speakers available for PCs and Notebooks. A friend uses them and has nothing but good things to say about them. I highly recommend!
