I got a problem!
I have a USB drive. I got it a few months ago, used it now and again, and then yesterday - when I was copying some files to it - all of a sudden I got an error message saying that the files can't be copied. It looks like the file (the one that got copied) is all there, but I can't copy it from the USB drive to a hard drive. I can't put new files on there. I can't delete the file. I can't format it. When I try to do those things, I either get a message saying there was an I/O error, or (more frequently) I get a message saying the drive is write protected. But there's no external switch to write-protect it! (It's made by Mimoco, who I emailed yesterday, and they're in no hurry to write back.) So how do I make it usable again? This thing was quite a chunk of money, AND this design is now discontinued! A slap on both cheeks, ****!

Found some info on similar issues and it offers a few soltions

worth a shot trying some maybe
good luck -
I tried all those things and they didn't help, but now it's gotten even worse!
It was in and I was trying to do the same things that didn't work before - format and all that fun stuff - when I noticed that the light indicator on the USB drive is not steady (i.e. connected) but rather, blinking (i.e. drive in use). Win Explorer which was open wouldnt refresh or whatever, so if I had an application covering it up and minimized it, the right-hand side that showed the file on the USB drive would be all white, but after a while I'd be able to see what's on it - the one file. BUT when I went to Disk Manager, the G drive wasn't there!
So I was like, enough of this craziness, pulled it out, stuck it back in, steady light. Back to its ways? Well, it shows up in Win Explorer but its name (FAIRYBIT) is gone - it just says removable drive. Disk Manager doesn't see it, I can't do dskchk because it can't open (find?) the drive, and if I click on it in Win Explorer to see its contents, it says that it can't find them and they may have moved.
Whaa?? The drive manufacturer called me and had no idea what's up, said it never happened before. They'll replace it (I think - website says must have receipt but I have a feeling they're too stumped to ask for one) BUT the limited edition design that I have is now sold out, and I'm not crazy (like, $80 crazy) about their new designs which are still available. Oh, Fairybit!!
Gosh ok now after being in for 10 minutes it popped up with its name and contents viewable but not editable. If I copy from it, I get "I/O Error", if I try to delete or format, I get "This disk is write protected" or "The parameter is incorrect" ahhh! I want my Fairybit back...

Did you try to format it on a MAC or Linux system? ... that's if it is a windows problem and not a hardware issue!
-
or try a different windows machine ? Should have asked before the file format is FAT32 correct ?
Try unistalling / reinstall USB drivers maybe ?
ya got me .... -
Tried it on 2 Macs, an iMac (the first one) and a G3 PowerPC, they can't even read it. (i.e. the icon for it doesn't appear on the desktop.) But, when I pull it out, it says hey Fairybit's gone, don't do it again!
I tried it on 5 different PCs as well, all with XP SP2, some Home some Pro, so drivers aren't the problem. Don't have any Linuxes around but my guess is, it's dead
I'll just keep my fingers crossed that maybe the replacement will be at least higher capacity. And get another one of these from one of the online vendors that have it in stock. $70 + shipping :gulp: In case anyone wants to know what a $70 256MB USB drive looks like, mimoco.com. (By the way, protobot1 and protobot2 512MB are on sale for $45 at ThinkGeek.com in case someone's interested.)
I'll wait till Monday when I call these guys up and tell them nothing worked, if someone has any ideas in the meantime...

this is just one of those things that I am almost certain will fail, but no harm in trying.

This software can be used to format and partition drives in windows so maybe it will see it and can do something about it. I am hoping that because this software recognizes most types of filing systems and has FULL support for FAT32 (unlike winXP) it can do something about it.
fingers crossed!
USB drive suddenly write-protected??
