Believe it or not I ran out of USB ports (External 2.5" HDD, 3.5" HDD, 5.25" DVD/RW, and wireless mouse dongle) + I would like to avoid using the 2 ports on the side, doesn't look too good.
So I need a good quality hub that doesn't cause loss in speed (*this is extremely essential to me*), at least not significantly, and I would like to have it powered just to be safe and in case I need to plug a power drawing device into it at some point. 4 or 7 ports, both will do fine!
oh ya ... the smaller the better, so that it takes less space when I am moving all my computer related junk around.
I looked at neweggs, and there are soooo many options. I cannot imagine going thru all to figure out which satisfies my needs + how would I know that it doesn't cause loss in speed!
NEED RECOMMENDATIONS BASED ON USAGE!

I also did some research on this and from what I've found out, the Belkin Tetrahub seems to be one of the best out there. Whenever you run a USB1.1 device and USB 2.0 device simultaneously through a crappy USB hub, both devices only run at the USB 1.1 device's speed. The Belkin Tetrahub somehow is able to prevent this from happening and could run both devices at their promised speeds.

I have a Belkin 8-port that I've found to be very good.

Qwester,
I have 2 belkin 6 ports . All I know is that I like their products. I had a chance to get one then because of a deal I ended up with two. I don't have a need for two but they were Belkin, impressive and I wanted a 6 port Hub. I could have picked out anything in the store for the certificate I had but I wanted a 6 port USB 2/1 port and I knew Belkin was it. I read everything the package said and hoped it would just work good for me. I liked that it talked about speed but I guess I thought it would be fine no matter what. I couldn't wait to get right back home and try it!
The Speed is excellent,it doesn't slow down anything but it was not the entire selling point for me. The Belkin name, what I've read, reading the package and that's what I wanted.
Several people have commented watching me or sitting at my Desktop with me (that's where one is) how nice it looked and how quick it was not slowing down anything. One person is a hard Core Gamer and I don't know if that's the reason he noticed or not. I use all of the the 6 ports. I love it and never had a problem and I truly wasn't aware of the speed until it was mentined so many times. I hoped forit because it was mentioned on the package.
I do still have the package but It's put away pretty deeep in aa closet with spare computer things I get. I don't know the specific model. There were a few Belkin to choose from each a little different. I think that maybe like Brian kinda said by a simple statement is that they are a good brand in general. If you can find them locally for fair price, then you could return it if you didn't like it and not lose anything.
If I looked on the internet,I would be overwhelmed but could narrow it down a bit due to many I wouldn't consider but I'm glad I lucked out on seeing this one and having a 2nd (you never know) one. I always liked Belkin but I was impressed with what I read on the package and have not been let down. I could have gone for cheaper(the cost was doubled because it was at a Staples Store) but I couldn't. I liked what I was reading and now has proven to be true.
If it's the Belkin TetraHub (I don't know what it is) then so be it but I would go with Belkin for a hub in a split second like I said, did, and would again any day. Mine is not tiny but not at all considered large. I really wish I could get to the package for you. There's no way right now. To let you know,I didn't ask a sales person for advice. It was at a Staples store 2 minutes from my home and I bought it about 5 months ago used on 2 different Desktops both working at It's peak level which was better than I even expected. Now I would stick with Belkin in general,at least for a hub ! You've helped me so much ,I think it's worth trying now instead of going further but It's up to you.

The brand actually, and mine's a 6 when I looked at it at home...sorry for the confusion. It's a little older so I doubt they sell it anyway.

Qwester,
Nice! I guess you decided to try out the Belkin. It looks pretty sleek and small too. Mine is a bit older now even though It's months but simaler too what you chose,a little larger maybe/maybe not and nothing where its pointing up on top, there are ports on top but flat. The prices weren't too bad at all since you stressed how important certain features were and a bit lower than Staples . I just had a Credit that's how I ended up at Staples. I didn't even need a hub when I bought it or so I thought until I got home and put it to use.
I think hearing from a few people that have good things to say about Belkin hopefuly narrowed it down alot for you. It looks, sounds nice, the price was good as long as you end up with what you want it to do. I'm glad you posted the picture. After you use whatever you buy post back and give your impression. The fact that Brian suggested Belkin and then said it's a little older, they probably don't sell it saids alot for Belkin. All good!
P.S Mine cost $89.00 if bought alone but I had the $100 credit and did end up with two of them. It was a weekend special with rebates and a coupon invite!

You probably won't have this issue, but my older desktop (still, USB 2.0 though) was close to running out of USB ports (I like external devices), plus I was getting random error messages about power to the usb. First, I bought a powered usb2.0 hub, but I still got the error message. Next I upgraded my power supply, but still got the error. Finally had to add another PCI USB card, which solved the problem.
Several factors I think contributed to this: it's an eMachines desktop (using cheap-o components, I'm sure), I have lots of USB devices (printer, sound card, camera, DVD burner, scanner, etc), and the machine dates to around the time USB2.0 was just getting adopted, so there may be bios issues. I only bring it up to show that a powered USB hub doesn't always solve your port problems.
I'd be willing to bet that any fairly new laptop wouldn't have these issues since USB has been out so long now, and there are so many USB devices out there. FWIW, I bought a Dlink powered 4 port USB hub because it was cheap. (Did I mention that I'm cheap?[])

yup same model. it's actually $30.

BTW I've read about a lot of people having problems with buy.com, but in all the times that I have used them they have been extremely fast shipping and never shipped a wrong item or anything of that sort. shipping is especially fast when they ship from their warehouse in GA instead of CA!

Qwester,
It's the same......I hope when you get it that you'll be pleased about going with Belkin and the model you chose. Incredible price difference from $69.99 . How could you resist not buying two after seeing the original price ? It is simialer to mine and I paid more than (with a gift credit) even getting one free and that was about 5 months ago. We know It's not the same model because mine are 6 ports. I still think Belkin was the right choice.
As fo Buy.com I have only ordered e few times from them and it's always so quick. The Nero came in 3 days and it was the free shipping which is suppose to be slower. I've never had trouble or had to return anything.
I'm glad you posted this for people to see. I'm just waiting to hear what you think. Please post when you get it.

Qwester,
I hadn't opened my Nero before now and inside the package was a flyer with sale things,etc...On the front of the flyer is the Belkin Hub. The price you paid is $30.10 and the price on the flyer is $29.96. It is the same item and certainly no reason to call over pennies because the flyer is A "typo". I was shocked because if I had looked when I first received it ,then I could have told you before you posted it from the Belkin site. Thank god you found it anyway.
When I was reading the reviews I happen to know one of the people. He only lives 10 minutes from me. I think you got such a good deal. I am going to use the second one for one of my notebooks. I'm excited for you and will hate myself if you aren't happy but I doubt that'll happen.
I looked to see where it was shipped from and it was Pennsylvania.
Post when you get it. I know you're going to try it out immediately.

I hope they ship from somewhere close to me so that I get it in the shortest time possible. (my webcam is disconnected at the moment because I have no available ports [
])
One thing that annoys me about buy.com, all the coupons that they have are for first time customers. I never get a chance to use them, and the first time I ordered from buy.com I didn't know about the coupons []
I could have used the "-$5 off more than $50", cause I also ordered the new sony in canal earphones (I had the older model and just loved them!)
[EDIT]: The flyer you got has the item on it probably because it is currently listed as deal of the day ... it seems I decided to buy the belkin hub at the RIGHT time []

Qwester,
You just may get the hub tomorrow or Tuesday. Please post what you think. It's still available at $30 and I have a $15 coupon that I wanted to suggest to someone I know to purchase. He loves mine but if you post a review I can have him read also. My coupon expires 5/30 although I don't know how long the price will last.
Plus I'm curious if you're going to be happy with it.......

Belkin USB hub price dropped further to $27.99 [

On the other hand I got away with my earphones, which ran out of stock [][

One bad + one good = I accept.
Anyway I am actually posting to let you know (heart) that my hub will be delivered on friday according to UPS (they tend to be accurate with delivery dates). So if you want to wait for my first impression and testing if I experience any loss in speed using it, you can do so, since your coupon wont expire until monday!
Just a heads up []
