I am leaning toward the purchase of an Acer laptop but my biggest concern now is that there is only one USB connection. I need a minimum of three. Do I need a powered USB hub, does it have to be specifically for laptops, and is any particular brand better than another?

Any USB will do - ones 'made' for Laptops are just likley smaller and of course will cost more. If you plan on running mutiple devices off the USB hub - then a powered one may be better - all depends on what and how many devices you are using at once.

As for Brands I have no particualr loyality - I current have a couple of powered hubs from Power Sentry - think I bought them at Costco (just make sure the hub is a USB 2 hub :D )

what will you be connecting to the hub? if it is self-powered things like a printer, then a non-powered hub is fine. if they are a bunch of bus-powered things like bus-powered drives, then the bus-powered hub might not do
