I bought a relatively generic External HDD enclosure 3.5" that I put a Western Digital 120GB in a month ago. USB2

Just last week i started noticing that i've been getting indexing errors etc. etc. and starts truncating files as corrupted whenever I chkdsk the drive.

I did a surface scan and it didn't detect any bad sectors.

What could be causing this? Is it possible that the External Enclosure's circuitry is causing this?

    Help! Advice pls? Thanks!

Some of those usb chipsets are known to be flakey. Firewire is more stable if that is an option. If you can find out who makes the chipset, perhaps there is an update for it. Drive could be bad as well. Been known to happen from time to time. Good Luck.

    hi guys!

i got the item over the weekend. works like a charm. Made a complete backup of my HDD with Drive Image XML. But one thing: the hard drive sometimes keeps spinning and gets soooo hot...is that cool? or will it get damaged?

These are only for temporary use. If you want something to actually be used as an "external hard drive" I would suggest getting one with a fan and made from aluminum. I have a few enclosures right now. One uses an older prolific chipset that won't work on hard drives over 250 gb. It is a bytecc one

This is the one I got to replace it, it has a fan and right now I have a 300 gb seagate in it and it seems to be keeping this thing nice and cool. I had initial problems with it, but once that was out of the way, it was smooth sailing. I have had it on for about 2 weeks straight, no problems as of yet.

I think you should be fine if your just using it for once a week backups. Every hard drive gives off heat, so I don't think you should be in any trouble if the hard drive will only be on for a few hours every week or so.
